Hugh Thomas nació en Windsor, Inglaterra, en 1931. Es uno de los más prestigiosos historiadores contemporáneos. Ha sido catedrático en la Universidad de Reading y profesor invitado en numerosos centros especializados. Es miembro de la Real Academia Española de la Historia y de la Royal Historical Society. Ha recibido importantes premios y distinciones por sus trabajos de investigación. Entre sus obras destacan La guerra civil española y La historia inacabada del mundo. Hugh Thomas está considerado como una referencia indiscutible de la historiografía británica y española.

Libro incompleto

Este libro me decepciono. Aunque el autor es un reconocido historiador y escritor, este libro le da demasiado énfasis al aspecto económico y a la producción azucarera. Habla muy poco de las figuras principales de la historia cubana. No comenta nada sobre la vida social y cultural de Cuba. A veces le da mas importancia a personajes de EU y España, como si la historia de Cuba hubiera sido regida exclusivamente por estos países.
