About the Author
Virginia Sanchez-Korrol is Professor Emerita at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. She is the author of From Colonia to Community: The History of Puerto Ricans in New York City (University of California Press, 1994) and co-editor of Latinas in the United States: A Historical Encyclopedia (Indiana University Press, 2006) and Latina Legacies: Identity, Biography and Community (Oxford University Press, 2005). Chair of the Library and Archives Advisory Group of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, Sanchez-Korrol writes a blog about Puerto Ricans and Latinas in the United States for The Huffington Post.

A significant contribution to history

As a student and teacher of Latin American history, I found this work created an indomitable figure, an abolitionist, a feminist, and a fierce patriot of her beloved Cuba, Emilia was pressured into exile for standing up to the oppressive and brutal Spanish regime in Cuba. An outspoken critic of the Spanish authorities, she demanded nothing short of complete independence for Cuba. Considered an enemy of the state, she and her family were forced to emigrate to the United States where Emilia lived most of her life in New York City. There, even in the face of personal adversity, she managed to raise money and armies to wage the Cuban Ten Years War (1868-1878). The only Spanish possessions still under the iron grip of Spain at the time, Cuba and Puerto Rico, would each go on to wage unsuccessful rebellions against Spanish rule culminating in the Spanish-American War, (1898).
Through meticulous historical research, historian, Virginia Sanchez Korrol, imagines the woman Emilia might have been. The author's astute knowledge of Caribbean history and Latino/American women throughout this period, allows her to vividly portray Emilia's world in Cuba as well as in New York, with beauty, humor, deep cultural understanding and compassion for her heroine. Her ability to weave Emilia's letters, her husband's memoirs, and historical manuscripts and documents into a vivid, intriguing portrait of Emilia as a mother, a wife, a revolutionary and a Cuban-American, resurrects Emilia from the dustbins of history and breaths life into an important foot soldier in the global struggle for freedom and dignity.
