Excellent Introduction to Radiology

I used this book for my MS-IV rads rotation. I went through most of the chapters and I think I have absorbed enough from this text to judge it objectively. I found this book to be a perfect introductory companion for both medical students and residents. It serves to help you pick up on the most essential points of diagnostic imaging without delving into endless minutiae.

The contents are well-organized and the most common pathologies are both clearly explained and pointed out on corresponding images. In addition, there are quite a few very helpful pearls and mnemonics for rote memorization of differential diagnoses, etc. Some of those are awesome and easy to remember.

Overall, I have been impressed. Once again, I would highly recommend this text to senior med students and interns. Radiology can be so complex that, without learning the basics, one may easily get lost in its kaleidoscopic dazzle. This is where this text comes in. Besides, it may very well help you avoid feeling like an idiot next time you consult your radiology colleagues.

About the Author
Christopher McMahon has a PhD in theology from The Catholic University of America. His areas of interest include Christology, ecclesiology, and Scripture. Starting with a short preamble and a detailed discussion, the book continues with a general section dealing with the basics of orchids and orchid taxonomy. Thereafter, the genus Paphiopedilum, representing the Asian tropical and subtropical slipper orchids is discussed. The infrageneric divisions of the genus are explained and each and every one of the 95 species of the genus is treated in detail: basionym (the name as given in the original publication), synonym(s), discussion, etymology (origin of the name of the species), detailed description, distribution and habitat, flowering data in situ and in cultivation (as far as available), miscellaneous notes such as the mitotic chromosome count, and varieties and forms (as far as applicable). All species are illustrated whereby the great majority of pictures are photographs taken from plants in cultivation and in their natural habitat. Close-ups are available for all species, in situ photographs for a great number of the taxa. Furthermore, we have includes a great number of plates from famous botanical works.
After the descriptive section, there is a block with identification keys to the various subgenera, sections, and subsections, and finally for each of these, there is a key leading to the species. The book is completed by a list of plant names, a bibliography and a list of illustrations.
Overall the lay-out of the book warrants easy use. Those not interested in the purely scientific chapters can easily jump directly to the descriptive part of the work that is perfect for identifications in the greenhouse and in the field.
Based on the legendary books about the genus published by Prof Braem and his team in 1988, 1998/1999, and 2003, the present monograph is the best ever written on the subject, and will be the standards text for many years to come. Two of four taxons of the mentioned complex are from good reasons not generally accepted

I am still reading this issue but am not sure if the taxonomic level of plant complexes has the scientific background in comparison with current literature sources, e.g. the plant complex regarding the Paphiopedilum philippinense. Two of four taxons of the mentioned complex are from good reasons not generally accepted, i.e. latifolium and cannartianum and the remaining two, i.e. the philippinense and roebbelenii differ in details and are treated as separate species. I see the plant complex level in this book as a taxonomic splitting only without reasonable background. Secondly, several recently described taxons (see e.g., Die Orchidee) are not accepted. I appreciate more figures especially from the natural habitats. I would like to stress that I did not finish to read all the issue and it seems to me be better than the first edition from 2003 published in Tropicalia.

Some missing recipes

This book is a great first attempt at a book that has been needed for a long time. It covers the everyday practical parts of managing a MySQL server.

I have been hungry for this book for a long time. Most books about MySQL focus on the SQL language and give you long chapters on how to form complex queries. Or, they dive deep into MySQL commands command and the use of my.cnf. I have a bookshelf full of these books. None have given me help making backups on-the-fly without interrupting customer services or preventing mysqldump from failing with error 2013. This book, "MySQL Admin Cookbook", covers everyday issues database administrators (DBA) face.

I'm calling it a "first attempt" because you'll get a taste of the practical side but the authors don't give you all the tools. It covers transferring connections settings between different machines with a network share. Good. It doesn't talk enough about the tools every MySQL DBA know, like MaatKit, openarkkit, mycheckpoint, mysqltuner and so many more.

Another example, Chapter 5 covers the common details for loading large data sets using the LOAD DATA INFILE command. Common. But it doesn't talk about how you can replace a CSV or MyIsam files directly with tools like mysql-replace-tables-live.

If you are NOT a DBA and MySQL is something you're using, I FULLY recommend this book. If you are a DBA, unless your new, you will find most of this book covers things you have already learned on your own.

This book starts like a very good HOWTO with replication in chapter one without mentioning
the monitoring tool mk-heartbeat. By chapter six it get cooking with good tips on analyzing, monitoring and configuring your MySQL and then simmers to an ending with managing users and schemas.

I look forward to Rev2 of this book when it really gets cooking.

Book needs a newer edition

Book is written for mysql 5.0 and 5.1 and contains at least 3 chapters on using mysql tools (mysql administrator and query browser) that have already been ended.

A good place for Novices and Intermediates to start

Usually I try to avoid the cookbook type of computer books because usually the 'recipies', often messy scripts or pages of obfuscated code, seem only to work for the authors and not for me. So I had a little trepidation when I was asked to review the MySQL Admin Cookbook. Daniel Schneller and Udo Schwedt manage to pack a lot of very solid information into 360 pages of text that would work for novice to intermediate MySQL DBAs and provide some food for thought for seasoned DBAs.
What I liked: The material was presented with the reasons behind the recipe and pointers to useful tools. Yes, all the material is in the manuals but sometimes there are too many trees in the way for a novice so see the trees. In very calm ,concise language, the authors tackle successfully a wide range of DBA chores in a way that is easy to follow.

I would not hesitate to give this book to a novice to intermediate DBA as a tool to help them work through replication, configuration, indexes and tools.

What I did not like: Time has marched on and the references to MySQL Administrator make a few tiny sections seem dated but I am sure only the Workbench team knew what that product would evolve into. Also the section on monitoring is a bit light but then most DBAs do not need to wade in as deeply as the book goes let alone into Enterprise Monitor or other tools.

So this book is a solid four out of five stars and well worth being brought home by those new to MySQL DBA work and those seeking 'recipes' for thier instances.
