Clear information packed on variation for physicists

This book from 1966 has been republished in a Dover edition and that usually means that it is a book that has become a classic, and this turns out to be correct in this case. There are many types of books on variational stuff. There are the mathematically inclined books on variational calculus. This is not one of them. This is a book on variational principles in theoretical physics. The style is clear and compact with many formulas and calculations given. It is a useful handbook on variational principles in physics and it could also serve as a text for a graduate level course. Its main weakness is perhaps in the lack of discussion of the conceptual background. It differs considerably from the classic by Yourgrau and Mandelstam which concentrates more on historical, philosophical, and conceptual aspects of the subject. But, if you have the right background for it, it is excellent.

Not worth the money

I have to say that this book gives a history of magic and some vague answers to the art of magic and illusion. It was basic information with some simple tricks. You could probably find the same stuff on the internet for free. If you are looking for answers about bigger illusions than making two matches pass through each other then this is not your book. He implies that the reader is not ready for some of the larger tricks in a tone that could be considered arrogant. Also, there is a lot of him tooting his own horn or telling you how great he is and how great his dad was, like we did not already know. He makes several references in the book as to how his dad was better than Houdini and how Houdini stole ideas and property from his dad. Maybe true, but thats not what I bought the book for. All in all, dont waste your money. It would be better spent elsewhere....you could learn more on YouTube and not have to read through all the fluff.

As a Conjurer I have studied the classic works of many of the great old conjurers. Of all of them Blackstone is one of the most well known. This book provides clear and simple explanations of some of the greatest tricks and illusions known to Magic. Great for the beginning or advanced conjuror.

I good book for learning the history of magic.

If you are looking for a book to learn magic tricks, try something else (like the Mark Wilson Course in Magic.) But if you would like a general book about magic history, especially the careers of the Blackstone Family, this is a good book to get. It covers all aspects of magic starting with ancient China, going through medieval times and heavily emphasizing from 1850 - 1980. Lots of photos and descriptions of a variety of magicians but only gets in depth with the Blackstones. It does have a few basic tricks but they are covered much better in other books.
Overall I enjoyed it.

"Cultural Tourism - The Partnership Between Tourism and Cultural Heritage Management" presents a strong and well argued case for building a vital and productive partnership between two potentially competing interest groups.
The book is an excellent and thorough disertation and expansion on the principles and guidelines contained in the "ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Charter". ICOMOS is the international organisation that brings together all those who work in the field of historic building and site conservation. The protection and conservation of their historic buildings, sites and places is an important part of the cultural identity of every community. Presentation of the significant characteristics of these places to the public is essential if there is to be widespread support for their protection and conservation. The tourism industry plays an important part in this presentation process.
Hilary and Bob have explored many of the ideas contained in the Charter, provided case studies and taken the work into new areas. As a result, I have no doubt that it will become one of the seminal texts related to the work of the ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Committee, as it encourages productive linkages between toruism and cultural heritage management internationally.

Hisashi Sugaya, former Chairman of the Committee notes that "the book identifies those factors that must be considered when evaluating the tourism potential of cultural or heritage assets, and presents a model for evaluating how to integrate tourism with cultural heritage management". Dr Walter Jamieson, a heritage tourism consultant working in South East Asia, notes that "the book is a very useful contribution to our understanding of maintaining our heritage within the context of tourism development".

One of the best titles on cultural tourism: well structured, concise, lucid and documented with relevant examples. Nothing is too much here. The authors are focused on the main issues of the subject, which is dissected in a precise and coherent way. As a textbook it would gain a great popularity among students!

Cultural heritage tourism bible

As a Phd student interested in cultural heritage tourism, I wish I had had this book two years ago. Unfortunately, it was not in the university library--but I eventually discovered it online and ordered a copy for myself--then got the library to order one, too.

The book especially helped me appreciate and start to incorporate cultural heritage management ideas and principles into my research and writing. Both authors teach at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and have been working in the field of cultural tourism and/or management of heritage for 20 years. Reading this book is like taking a graduate level class from them personally!

One tip: The hard copy is $170 and the paperback is around $45.

Reconstruction's Freedom Road

Even though this fictional book was assigned for a class in Civil War history, it turned out to be an enjoyable assignment. It is a very readable account of Reconstruction from 1865 to 1877. The book describes how well Reconstruction was working for recently emancipated slaves in South Carolina, and how bad it was going for the elite southern whites there. It does an amazing job of portraying the positive struggles of African Americans, and some working class whites, and how they were succeeding, until the final withdrawal of Union troops from the South.

This book is fun to read in the beginning, but the sad consequences of Reconstruction bring it to the inevitable conclusion. This does not detract from the book's accurate portrayal of what really caused Reconstruction to fail.

This is an excellent book that you will have no trouble reading in one sitting. If you read this book, you will understand what really happened during Reconstruction, and the real facts that they failed to tell most of us in high school. This book was published in 1944, long before most US historians recognized how southern historians had distorted the country's view of Reconstruction. Thanks to recent historians, we now have a much more accurate picture of this era.

Vision of a New World, and Denunciation of Tyranny

Based on historic facts for those who care to dig deeply enough, Freedom Road presents a searing, alternative view of Reconstruction, using the words and work of the people it helped; the people for whom freedom was recently earned with great difficulty, and not to be forsaken at any price.

Freedom Road should be required reading for any devotee of quality fiction, for anyone who thinks they know the story of Reconstruction, and for anyone who is not afraid of being presented with issues that cause anger, introspection and, ultimately, hope that a better day has finally come.

Still fighting the Civil War

Wan't quite clear on some points of reconstruction. Although I was surprised at the amount of Northern involvement in trying to recreate the Southern "aristocracy". It was a very informative book. I lived in Alabama for several years and now live in Virginia. I am originally a mid-westerner so I ha d quite a cultural adjustment to make. I would recommend this book to everyone, especially to those who have never lived in the South, it explains a lot of their attitude/bias on several counts.

Very good text & commentary

Zetzel provides us with the Latin text of a significant portion of Cicero's partially preserved dialogue on the nature and the forms of government. His (Zetzel's) commentary, by far the bulk of this book, guides any Latin reader through Cicero's text and philosophy without giving away too much in translation. The niceties of the grammar are generally overlooked for comments on Cicero's style and political ideas. This would not make an ideal textbook, but a careful instructor can find much to illustate Cicero's Stoic approach to the ideal state.

In particular, Zetzel provides us with the Dream of Scipio- a very manageable Latin text from a student's perspective, but also loaded with pre-Christian ideas of the afterlife and the proper exercise of virtue. I ordered this book for the latter reason, but found myself drawn into reading the entire selection without regret. For that specialized audience of Latin readers who are interested in the Stoics, Cicero, and Roman political theory, this is a good bet.

This book is loaded with great insight from some of the best tournament players in the horse racing community, many of which are friends of mine and also just overall superb handicappers.
