A non-fundamentalist Arab nation in North Africa that borders the Sahara desert, Tunisia was praised by U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan "as one of the few countries in the world that serves as an international model." History records Tunisia as the home of Carthage and of Hannibal, the general who marched elephants over the Alps along with his army. According to Geyer, modern Tunisia is no less impressive, possessing a middle class of 80%, laws that ensure every child receives an education and an impressive women’s rights record. No less than 40% of Tunisian women work, many as policewomen, diplomats, filmmakers and CEOs of major companies. Geyer sees Tunisia as "a country that works," and she backs this assertion by relating a series of conversations with various politicians and prominent academics. The reasons for Tunisia’s success are many. There have been two presidents since 1956 whose progressive policies have worked wonders for the country’s infrastructure. Foreign Minister Habib Ben Yahia cites Tunisia’s commitment to maintaining a "dialogue of all the social forces in the country" as a buffer to extremist tendencies. Student Diomande Soumaila says that the capital’s university teaches students to think independently "instead of simply following the Koran and the Prophet’s sayings." Tunisia does have a dark spot, however: a record of internal human rights violations. Occasionally, Geyer’s admiration for Tunisia’s political leadership can jar with trite observation, such as when she writes that woman "chirped like a bird in her Berber tongue" as if she were "a creature from some enchanted aviary." Fortunately, such attempts at lyricism aren’t overdone; Geyer’s journalistic instincts win out, and the reader benefits from her good analysis of a unique country.

A fixture in Washington, D.C.'s foreign policy salons, journalist Geyer has taken a shine to Tunisia and here lauds the country in a book she demurs from labeling as a travelogue, preferring instead the term "developmental political literature." Description of people and places is secondary to Geyer's narrative of Tunisia's relative economic success and political placidity, compared to its neighbors in the Arab world. For this she credits Tunisia's two leaders since the country gained independence from France in 1956: Habib Bourguiba, and, since that president-for-life was put out to pasture in 1987, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. The two leaders sponsored a sort of authoritarian progressivism, which has resisted the region's secular and religious radicalisms and has incrementally expanded economic and political rights. Geyer is especially impressed with women's freedom in Tunisia. Politics aside, the author imparts snippets of history back to Hannibal and evocations of Tunisia's landmarks and landscapes, but Tunisia's postcolonial political history is the soul of Geyer's work. A personal appreciation; a political history and assessment

I received this book as a gift. The book's subtitle is the key: "A country that works". By that is meant a country that functions well. Ms. Geyer reviews the recent history of Tunisia as led first by Habib Bourgiba and now by Ben-Ali, leaders who have carefully set up policies and investments (e.g. investment in girls' education) designed to raise the country from a poor agricultural French colony to a successful independent nation, reaching out to participate as a player in the European economy. The theme of the book is that true democracy - not just elections but stability and human rights - is very difficult to establish, requiring an educated populace, a sizable middle class, and a certain amount of mutual trust across the society - which have to be in place before elections; in this context, Tunisia's leaders have been carefully building these prerequisites and Tunisia stands out as an ongoing success against a background of failed efforts - including, so far, the effort in Iraq - to establish democracy by magic (or other) bullets. The book will reveal that Ms. Geyer has an affection for Tunisia and Tunisians, but I think her assessment is not bad - my daughter, her Tunisian husband, and her two children live in Tunisia (and all of them speak in English and Arabic) and Geyer's assessment is confirmed by our experiences there as well as many discussions about the matters raised in the book.

History has shown what a great mistake this book was

Authoritarian regimes all over the Third World, including the Arab World, have had their acolytes within Washington-based policy-making circles and among so-called detached 'experts'. Here's an example of the most harrowing kind. Human rights abuses were considered a mere 'dark spot', the absence of democracy not particularly troubling in the broader scheme of things, and neither was the existence of a greedy state elite in Tunisia. As long as they were anti-Islamist then these elites were fine, from such a point of view. And now we see that masses of ordinary people have risen up against these supposedly benign, enlightened regimes that were the favourite of the author and her ilk. The author should feel a sense of great shame, if not the need to explain how absolutely wrong the work was.

Good Reference Book for Working with the S7 300/400

This book does a great job in describing the various tasks necessary to program the S7 300/400 series of PLC's. Topics are presented in the form of questions such as "How do I add an input card to the configuration". The question is then answered in two ways. First by explaining the necessary steps, then by leading you through step by step.

The author also devotes quite a bit of the book to working with the hardware configuration, as well as describing the various option available when adding and configuring hardware components.

This book is a great supplement to the reference information supplied with Step 7.

Better than the manuals

Book is well ordered and much easier to follow than any of the manuals. It is lacking in information on programming using STL which is often used by European programmers. Personally I hate STL - while efficient it is hard to follow and debug for someone who is used to Ladder or FB programming. A good value for the price.

When Katrin Himmler, Heinrich’s great-niece, was 15, one of her classmates asked during a history lesson if she was related to the Himmler. "Yes," she stammered, at which there was a deathly hush in the classroom and the teacher, embarrassed and unsure, quickly moved the lesson on. As she grew older, Katrin gave her family history a wide berth, but married to an Israeli whose family was confined to the Warsaw Ghetto and with a young, half-Jewish son, she realized that she could not evade the past so easily. Katrin Himmler’s cool but meticulous examination of the Himmler story reveals—in all its dark complexity—the gulf between the "normality" of bourgeois family life and the horrors perpetrated by one member. A more nuanced portrait of Heinrich himself emerges—not a lone evil executioner, but a middle-class family man, loved and fully supported by his respectable German family.

Blood brothers

Hannah Arendt's thesis about the banality of evil, which she introduced in 1963 in "Eichmann in Jerusalem," has been knocked about quite a bit in recent years, but the history of "The Himmler Brothers" goes a long way to vindicate it.

There were three: the eldest, Gebhard, was a prominent educational administrator; the youngest, Ernst (grandfather of Katrin Himmler) was a leading radio engineer. If the middle boy, Heinrich, had become, say, a successful manager of a chain of department stores (which he easily could have, given his organizational talents), the family background would be regarded as unexceptional.

The father was a get-ahead teacher, and his father had in the middle of the 19th century successfully made the transition from an essentially medieval economic status to a low-level modern functionary, a customs agent with an irregular marital record: exactly the family history of Adolf Hitler, although Katrin Himmler does not mention that.

The Himmlers were normal, if stiff, examples of the Bavarian lower bourgeoisie, pious, Catholic, cultured, educated, frugal, monarchist, thrifty, snobbish, narrow.

They were also Jew-haters (by breeding, there is no evidence they had any personal conflicts with Jews), nationalists verging on fanaticism and terrified of slipping back into the working classes. (The last is not stated but can safely be inferred.)

In other words, typical of Germans in general and Bavarians in particular, which is why the Nazis had so little difficulty in recruiting what Daniel Goldhagen calls "Hitler's willing executioners" from among the tens of millions just like them.

If that's all "The Himmler Brothers" amounted to, it would hardly be worth the time it takes to read it. It is more.

Katrin Himmler makes it an extended essay on the family myth, which seems to have been unchallenged until 1997, when her father asked her, for reasons not quite clear, to look up Ernst Himmler's documents in newly opened government files. What he expected her to find was never revealed to her, but within minutes of opening the folder, Katrin Himmler realized that the myth was false: the brothers of Heinrich were not good Germans who happened to have an unsavory brother; they were convinced Nazis, as were their parents and, evidently, almost everybody among their acquaintance, who used Heinrich's influence to rise even faster than their genuine talents would have moved them. Family papers, saved when they could easily have been incinerated, completed the unmasking, and Katrin Himmler says none of her relatives demurred at the exposure.

Yet the book is still more. The epilogue is a shorter, poignant and profound essay on the psychological justifications made by the second and third generations of both people who bore the execrated name of Himmler and of the generations descended from victims of the Himmlers.

It could easily have become maudlin, but it never does. There are many biographies of Nazis, big and small, and many memoirs by their heirs. Few are are as revealing as "The Himmler Brothers."

Understanding Himmler

If you are interested in finding out the truth about what happened to Germany when the Nazis took over, this book provides an invaluable step toward understanding the character of the architects of The Third Reich and the Holocaust, and how human beings who cared about their friends, family and country could in turn become serial killers, annihilating millions of people and then justifying their murders with myths and grossly exaggerated lies.

Difficult to read

The book is somewhat of a problem to read. I assume that it is a translation from German, and suffers from poor editing or translation, or both. As a Holocaust survivor, I read the book to fill in details of the Nazi period to try and understand the motivation of the perpetrators of that horror. I suppose I was just looking in the wrong place for this information, since I did not find it here.

A GREAT tool to start you on your way to better speech!

Although I have my criticisms about the book, it's a solid 5 in my experience.

The book was required reading for my Diction course in college, so I came to know the book under a dubious first impression. The quirky nature of my course lent a bit of frustration towards the book that was unwarranted.

Once we started to dive into the contents of the book, did I begin to understand why my professor chose this text.

PROS:
- Everything is laid out simply.
- Easy to understand and use.
- Effectively categorized phonetically.
- Exercises that are explained and thorough for recovering from various speech issues
- Existentialism ← Sorry, couldn't help myself, needed to add another E word for giggles.
- Spells out dialectical issues concerning region and linguistic.

CONS
- There appear to be some phonetic sounds that aren't included, notably the Ʋ sound (something of a combination of W and V), which I needed for a research project.
- Despite being easy to understand and use, there were times when I felt lost trying to find certain phonetic areas, but that could just be the way the author decided to organize, which may just be in contrast to my own desires.
- Could use some updated (and cleaner appearing) graphical representations of the anatomy presented therein.

Ever since I took this class, and was required to read this book, I've been trying to convince other people how valuable the entire experience has been. As a native English speaker with minor speech issues, I found the entire text to be a great way to improve my speech, and I can only imagine how this might help something with larger issues.

I rented the book for class, but I intend to buy it for my own personal use.

Really great textbook, definitely worth the cost. Rented this for a great prize via Amazon! I love all of the exercises the book offers to improve voice. It's a required text for one of my classes and definitely very relative to my class. (Voice & Diction)

Logical Thinking with Patterns

This is Cuisenaire's companion book to the pattern blocks and it is wonderful! It contains 26 animal problem-solving puzzles, one for each letter of the alphabet. It was fun to figure out what blocks were necessary to cover each animal. This book also comes with directions for 20 activities relating to the animals that involve counting, estimating, sorting, symmetry, sequencing and visual/spatial awareness. This book, for grades 1-3, is a real gem and is reproducible!

This is a very helpful book for my 5 year old. He uses this as part of our math program. It teaches logical thinking and spatial skills. He even used the idea and created animals of his own using the pattern blocks!

Reading this latest offering of poetry and short prose pieces from Native American writer Alexie ( The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven ), it's easy to see why his work has garnered so much attention. Working from a carefully developed understanding of his place in an oppressed culture, he focuses on the need to tear down obstacles before nature tears them down. Fire is therefore a central metaphor: a sister and brother-in-law killed, a burnt hand, cars aflame. Tongue in cheek, Alexie inserts images from popular songs and movies, and catalogues aspects of traditional reservation life that have been sacrificed in America's melting pot. "After 500 years of continuous lies / I would still sign treaties for you," he says in one of this volume's many love poems--a love so powerful it threatens to engulf readers as well. Alexie renews the nearly forgotten sense of language equaling power. And the language in these sequential works is flawless, each section picking up from and expanding upon the previous one, poetry and prose working naturally together. "Imagination is all we have as defense against capture and its inevitable changes," he writes. And he proves his point.

Outraged pride, broken promises, and the scourge of alcoholism are the burden of these sharp-edged, high-impact poems, prose poems, mini-essays, and fragments of stories woven together in a tapestry of pain about death by fire and survival by endurance on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Memories of great Indian chiefs, "fancydancers," powwow campfires, and "some Crazy Horse dream," set against cruelty toward Native Americans, reveal "what went wrong with our love." Caught between alien white and disintegrated Native American cultures, "homeless and hopeful," Alexie uses the "magic and loss" of song and story to forge an "entire identity" out of anger and the nightmare of racism. Despite pain, this moving work celebrates something that can't be killed by cavalry swords, Thunderbird wine, "fake ceremonies," or "continuous lies": there is "nothing more beautiful than snow fallen onto the dark hair and braids of these Spokane Indians." About the Author
Sherman Alexie's poems, fiction, essays and films have won him an international following since his first book, THE BUSINESS OF FANCYDANCING, was published in 1992. SMOKE SIGNALS, the film he adapted from one of his short stories and co-produced, enlarged his audience still further. Alexie's awards include the Stranger Genius Award in Literature, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards for Excellence in Children's Literature in Fiction, and the National Book Award for Young People's Literature as well as honors and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Foundation, and a citation as "One of 20 Best American Novelists Under the Age of 40" from Granta magazine. An enrolled Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian, Alexie lives in Seattle with his wife and sons.

The Many Voices of Sherman Alexie

Sherman Alexi is an in-your-face poet, there's no doubt about it. He has a voice that demands to be heard, and you will listen, even unwillingly. His style is unique, mixing short, terse lines of verse alternating with long lines of prose that carry contrasts of charged emotion against the calming voice of reason. It is not an easy read. There are harsh truths, but truths that need to be addressed and heeded. His voice is the voice of many and the voice of few, but all demand you hear them. Powerful and moving.When I finished reading it, I felt as if I'd been shot in the back with many arrows and was left carrying around holes in my heart.

Excellent Technique

A very sad collection of pieces by Alexie, covering all manner of topics of res life. More impressive, however, is his use of style and technique in these works. Sometimes in traditional poem format, sometimes in prose writing, flirting with fiction storytelling. Around every page is a new experience. This is a great collection.

Sorry if that sounded gushy, but throughout the pathos and humor, I coulldn't help but marvel at this man's spirit-- and his literary skills. I've seen his interviews and featured bios on television and reading his work brings it all to life. I wish I had his ability to draw verbal pictures. Thank you for being you!
