Morrell begins by arguing for a broader definition of the "critical" in critical literacy – one that encapsulates the entire Western philosophical tradition as well as several important "Othered" traditions ranging from postcolonialism to the African-American tradition. Next, he looks at four cases of critical literacy pedagogy with urban youth: teaching popular culture in a high school English classroom; conducting community-based critical research; engaging in cyber-activism; and doing critical media literacy education. Lastly, he returns to theory, first considering two areas of critical literacy pedagogy that are still relatively unexplored: the importance of critical reading and writing in constituting and reconstituting the self, and critical writing that is not just about coming to a critical understanding of the world but that plays an explicit and self-referential role in changing the world. Morrell concludes by outlining a grounded theory of critical literacy pedagogy and considering its implications for literacy research, teacher education, classroom practice, and advocacy work for social change.

Very dense, but full of info

I read this book as part of a course, and I struggled through most of it because of the language. I think the approach is a valid one, and it is something I hope to use in my future classroom. But do not expect to read this leisurely on a Sunday afternoon, this is definitely a dense critical text that requires your full attention to comprehend. I commend the author on sharing his experience in the classroom.

Marrying in 1912, he was to hold various positions in railway engineering before becoming Chief Assistant Engineer, and it was during an illness-induced absence from work that he wrote his first novel, The Cask (1920), which became an international success. Considered a classic of the detective genre, it was followed by a steady production of more than thirty novels, most of which featured the meticulous Inspector French of Scotland Yard. An influential and key pioneer of the genre, Crofts became an early member of the legendary Detection Club in London along with Agatha Christie, Anthony Berkeley and other established mystery writers. He also wrote numerous plays for the BBC, dozens of short stories, a number of true crime works, and a religious book. Known for tight plots and scrupulous attention to detail, his work set new standards in detective fiction plotting. In 1939, the author was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. In retirement from engineering he continued to write and pursued music, carpentry, gardening and travel. He died in 1957.

The novel opens in the old house of Starvel on a gloomy September afternoon in a remote part of Yorkshire. By Page 17 the house is burnt down, and by Page 20 the charred remains of its three inmates are discovered.
An atmosphere of gloom and dreariness is maintained throughout this novel. The house fire is found to be the result of arson, the inmates to have been murdered, and a vast amount of money to have been stolen. By Page 46 Detective Inspector French takes over the case, and we follow his investigations thereafter.
Renowned for his narrative and plot construction skills, even by 1927 when this his seventh mystery novel appeared, Crofts uses the resources of melodrama here rather than drawing on his expertise in engineering which he was later to utilize so brilliantly. We are given, however one glimpse of a 1920s railway train. "The huge engine with its high-pitched boiler and stumpy funnel rolled slowly past, followed by coach after coach, brightly lighted, luxurious, gliding smoothly by." More often encountered are dastardly murders, deadly rivalries, exhumations, and villains in disguise. Typical 1920s detection procedures are employed. Useful identifications are obtained from taxi drivers, and from bank tellers who record the numbers of bank notes of large denominations. Slowly but surely French has his man cornered and is ready to call "Check Mate" when something totally unexpected happens.
Readers who enjoy sampling mysteries from the "Golden Age of Detective Fiction" should not overlook this one. As usual Crofts' plain but fluent story telling makes for easy reading. Each sentence dovetails perfectly into its neighbors, as is the way in good storytelling.

High Quality "Humdrum" Mystery

Freeman Wills Croft was once quite a big name in mystery fiction, although nowadays he's probably only known to hardcore buffs. Some of these buffs have recently classified him as a "humdrum" writer -- I'm not one hundred percent sure what all is meant by the term, but I take it that it means, at least in part, a quiet concentration on the "humdrum" facts of detection.

That surely describes Croft,who would probably be classified in the "police procedural" bin nowadays. Its a mystery, with a puzzling crime, clues, an investigator and a surprising ending, but the focus is on procedure and the careful step by step process of Inspector French, Croft's detective.

This story is carefully written but it's pleasant in its carefulness, if that makes any sense. This is a very craftsmanlike sort of book and there's a real pleasure in that, it's very readable. French doesn't really have an inner life or psychology (outside of some modest ambition now and then), but we end up liking him anyway, maybe simply because Croft keeps the viewpoint fairly tight on French for most of the book. The case is clever and has a couple of great reverses, just when you think you have it all figured out. It flags a little when Croft tries to get actual people in it (a love story) or actual emotion (an ill-advised "thriller" portion), but mostly I can recommend this to fans of golden age mysteries.

Classic Crofts

One of Crofts's most highly praised works, which lives up to its reputation with ease. A miser and his servants are burnt to death in Yorkshire; despite the verdict of accident, murder is suggested by the fact that the bank notes, which should have perished in the fire, are still in circulation. French, disguised as an insurance investigator, travels north, and from there to France and Scotland. Despite a great deal of travelling, his plodding detection is genuinely interesting, and, although he only solves the crime a minute before he arrests the murderer, he comes across as more of a thinker than in later tales. The red herrings to which he applies his mind are as fresh as the writing and characterisation; and, although the reader will not be unduly surprised by the final revelation, he will marvel at the intricacy of a highly ingenious plot, with a nice bit of body-snatching for extra merit.

The Pooh Perplex

I first read The Pooh Perplex in the summer before my freshman year of college; my father presented it to me as an encapsulation of the reasons why he had abandoned his English major. I had not yet encountered Leavis, Crane, and the other critics so marvelously parodied in Crews's book, but I spent a good few hours shrieking with laughter at Myron Masterson's vision of Kanga as castrating "'Mom' figure" and Simon Lacerous's characterization of the bear himself as a flabby old Tory with a string of knightly titles and an overfondness for condensed milk.

Then I came to college and took a Literary Criticism and Theory class; with wonder, I recognized in my casebook more and more of the bizarre characters inhabiting Crews's topsy-turvy hermeneutic milieu. Oddest of all, I found that my reading of The Pooh Perplex had actually provided me with a fairly solid overview of structuralism, Marxist theory, and other critical concoctions my professor obliged me to imbibe. And when I gave Crews's work a second reading, I discovered a myriad of hilarities that had previously passed me by.

Though it is depressing that Crews's zany satire can help a student of literature grasp the principal critical theories of the past fifty years, I disagree with my father's justification for forsaking his major. Many critics unintentionally self-parody; to endure their bombast, the reader must absorb the good, dismiss the inane, and find in the ludicrous a scrap or two of humor. Fortunately, we have Crews to assist us with that last task. Satire is a dying art; read The Pooh Perplex to understand why it is still necessary.

Brilliant and funny

It was probably the publication of Postmodern Pooh, Frederick Crews's second venture into Pooh studies, that explains the renewed availability of The Pooh Perplex more than 40 years after its first appearance. But whatever the reason, it is an excellent thing that modern readers can get hold of it, both because it is a brilliant and witty book in itself and also because it makes a natural companion for Postmodern Pooh.

For those who have not met the book before it should be explained that it is a series of parodies of different styles of literary criticism (those that were fashionable in the 1960s) applied to Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner, collected together as a "case book" of the kind that was then popular for elementary English courses, and accompanied by Questions and Study Projects prepared by the editor, ostensibly Crews himself, but in reality as much of a parody as the articles themselves.

No doubt one would need to be familiar already with the parodied styles to get the most from the book, but no matter; one can get a great deal of amusement from it without any specialist knowledge, and some of the sources are fairly obvious even to non-specialists, the Freudian analysis by "Karl Anschauung", for example, or the proletarian analysis by "Martin Tempralis". On the other hand, readers born since the book was written may not easily recognize F. R. Leavis thinly disguised as "Simon Lacerous".

The non-specialist reader will easily be tempted to believe that Crews is exaggerating. Surely no serious expert on English literature could really express some of the sillier ideas expressed in this book? Alas, he amply demonstrates with real quotations from real (and apparently serious) publications that they could and they did.

Keep You In Confusion

Frederick Crews made his name back in 1963 with this punchy, sardonic parody of academic self-importance. Over 45 years later, it retains its power to cut to the quick. Though not laugh-out-loud hilarious, it has a wit that exposes truth to the light of day. Though it goes on a bit longer than is actually necessary to prove its point, it remains a reminder to those of us who work with words and ideas of why we need to be humble.

In his facetious introduction, Crews tells eager freshman that this book "is frankly designed to keep you in confusion." Since too many freshman texts to exactly that, this take is all too just. The satirical articles then go on to deflate the most pompous mid-century literary critics, including Lacan, Bloom, and Eliot. Some of the references may be dated, but even if we don't recognize all of Crews' individual targets, we know the type.

The paradoxical aspect is that this book could almost be used to teach how to do criticism correctly. By mocking what the various schools do wrong to make themselves ridiculous, Crews also shows how they can be made communicative and useful. That being the case, every English major should have a copy of this book thrust into their hands. Literate and dense, but readable and funny, this is a must for all of us working in the humanities.

Longer than it needs to be but the simple GOLDEN advice is:
Do your demo BACKWARDS, kinda like a cooking show.

E.g., I make speech therapy software.
So I'd :

1. Show the software in action (ideally with a video of a stroke survivor using it)
2. Show maybe an easy, medium and hard exercises.
3. THEN show them how they can choose different lessons and different difficulty levels.

So... you show the PAYOFF first, then the "how to" aftwards.

Good book, but too long and too cute

Despite stating his preference for substance over style (p. 169) Mr. Cohan lets his style overwhelm the content of his book. Great Demo! contains excellent advice and is very practical in their presentation, particularly for people who are starting in a field role and need a basic road map for their customer encounters.

As far as style, Mr. Cohan's tendency to tell long stories from his experiences in the field ("...I set up my computer, connected to a network connection, and adjusted the LCD projector" p. 146) makes this book too long. Additionally, The Author's tendency to capitalize! Random Nouns and obsessive use of Exclamation Marks! disrupt the flow of reading. Lastly, for a writer that claims that "Humans are visual creatures" (p. 86) the lack of any illustration or charts, except sample customer org charts, is curious. I can think of a graphic model showing the author's proposed methodology and the progress made through it, allowing the reader to visualize their own progress.

In the substance section, the book is a very solid interpretation of solution selling for technical sales engineers. It gives a good methodology for discovery as well as structure for creating demos and presentations that may help capture the audience and create interest and discussion.

I recommend the book to whoever is starting in a technical sales role or feels the need to ramp up their presentation or to those managers interested in closer integration of their sales force and technical field teams.

To Mr. Cohan I recommend hiring a qualified editor for his next book.

This is an amazing manual, far more than what I had hoped. It covers compressed air systems from the end use all the way back to the compressor room. This book is a "must have" if you are serious about understanding your compressed air system and how to improve not only energy efficiency, but reliability, air quality, and lifespan. Was confirmed and delivered efficiently and in a timely manner.
