A Blessing to Read!!

Dr. Varner's dedication to biblical scholarship and his devotion to God are both evident in this book. It is a wonderful example of the Holy Spirit's use of academic knowledge to lead one to adoration. Truly, as I read through each Psalm and Dr. Varner's comments, the awesomeness of God was put on display, and I could do nothing but adore, praise, and worship Him.
This is an excellent devotional commentary that every Christian should read for the pure purpose of praising our Messiah, occupying our minds with Him, adoring our King, and delighting in His Word!

A Book To Savor

'Awake O Harp' is an added treasure to the ultimate invaluable treasure - God's Word. Dr. Varner goes through each Psalm giving line-by-line commentary using an outline form (including each Psalm in it's entirety)to paint a picture making it possible to visualize the main points of each psalm - and he does so masterfully, showing the reader how the Psalms' messages are timelessly relevant and imparting understanding of how they apply to us today. It is evident, by the depth and insight of his commentaries, that Dr. Varner has a deep understanding of the language, prose and culture of ancient Biblical times. In the 'Introduction', Dr. Varner suggests taking time to pour over each psalm rather than rush through them. I can't help but find myself taking often several days to truly savor but one psalm.
I have been so blessed by 'Awake O Harp' that I have been buying copies as gifts for friends so they too may be blessed by a deeper understanding of the Psalms!

A student's perspective on the book

As a student of Dr. Varner, I was required to write a reaction to the book for his Old Testament class. This is my reaction:
Awake O Harp by Dr. William Varner provides many things which, in combination, make up a great devotional on the Psalms. The book provides hope while remaining honest in the history and themes in many of the Psalms. It does not shy away from addressing depressing or disorienting passages; it addresses them with the attitude of the original author and provides insight into the life of the author at the time the Psalm was written. It also provides history that many devotionals leave out. A devotional is usually seen as something that reaches inward, something that makes one think about God and forces one to meditate on Scripture. Yet Awake O Harp is a commentary as well. Psalms are broken down into categories and the historical context is provided so that we as readers know what the Psalms truly mean. It is of paramount importance that these psalms and songs to God not be taken out of context to show only the positive attributes of God. The negative attributes such as wrath and judgment are in the Psalms, and Awake O Harp shows these traits alongside the positive ones. Its comfort and honesty alongside its history and context create a balance not found in many other devotionals on the Psalms.
Great comfort is to be found in the Psalms, and Awake O Harp does a great job of pointing out how comforting it is to truly rely on and trust in God's hessed for us. It magnifies His name and shows us how unconditionally He loves us through the authors of the Psalms. We can see the dependence of each author on God to sustain him in times of great peril. If God is faithful to them in their times of need, how much more will He be faithful to us in ours? Often, we fail to rely on God and instead become stressed under the pressure of daily life, whether at work, school, or home. Life is not easy and furthermore, it is impossible to walk upright in the Lord without relying on Him. We see in the Psalms that He is always with us, as a Father with open arms. Personally, I find that I feel very comforted in the hands of a great God after reading a devotion from Awake O Harp.
The Psalms are not all about our own comfort, however. We are able to see directly into the most personal, humbling parts of the authors' lives. As readers, we tend to judge the writers and think that their sins were greater than our own, but that is not the case at all! Awake O Harp provides not only honest insight into the lives of the great men of Israel, but also into our own lives. Comparing ourselves and our shortcomings to those of the original authors is something that this book does quite often. We, as readers, are forced to be completely honest about the sins of old as well as the sins of our own lives and we are called to repentance, just as Israel was called in the time of the Psalms. It is crucial to constantly check our own lives to be killing sin lest it be killing us. I am challenged by Awake O Harp to live a life worthy of my calling in Jesus Christ and to call upon God in repentance for my failures apart from Him.
One of the most noticeable things about Awake O Harp is its emphasis on history. Each daily (or in the student's case, partial daily) reading begins with an overview of Israel's history or a specific part of an individual's history. History is a large part of the Bible, so why should it not be a large part of commentaries and devotionals? This book presents Israel's history as a nation and as individual people in a fascinating way. It provides references to parts of Scripture outside of the Psalms to enrich the reading of the Psalm itself. The best commentary of Scripture is Scripture. Personally, I do not like history much; I'm more of a math person. However, I look forward to reading about the history of Israel surrounding individual Psalms. It becomes less of a manual of how to live and more of a personal journal that I can relate to and therefore change my life accordingly. Awake O Harp has encouraged me to focus on the text as relevant to today. It is so easy to read it and think, “That's nice, but it was so long ago.” Yet the Bible is the most relevant book there is! Each Psalm can accurately describe not only the historical situation, but it can often describe modern situations on a daily basis.
The history provided is an excellent source of context so that the Psalms are not misinterpreted. Any reasonable Bible scholar will proclaim that context is of utmost importance when reading or commenting on any part of the Bible. The Psalms are no different. Many devotionals focus on the reader and make the Psalms personal, which is a good thing, but they miss the point of many Psalms. Sometimes, a Psalm is not meant to teach so much as it is a prayer or a confession to God. Awake O Harp provides the context necessary to know what the point of the Psalm is. It breaks the Psalms into categories and explains how the situation and the words place it into each category. Personally, I love knowing what was going on during the time each Psalm was written so that I can accurately apply it to situations in my life or provide comfort to others when they need it.
Lastly, each devotional ends in prayer. This is the perfect way to wrap up a daily devotion. While a Christian should already have a habit of daily prayer, these few sentences to God prompt the reader to open up his heart and reflect on the contents of the Psalm to God. Meditation is commonly overlooked in the Christian walk, but it is so important and the little prayer at the end of each reading is at least a brief time of mediation for the reader. It provides a transition between reading the Word and moving into the busy day. We are called to pray without ceasing so as to keep our focus on God at all times. This little prayer provides a foundation for meditation and personal prayer as the reader continues on to another activity. It sticks in the mind and affects each action we perform daily. Personally, it is hard to “slow down” from my busy schedule to read and pray. Having a prayer to read changes my mindset about what is important and sets me straight. It allows me to easily slip into a time of personal prayer that would have otherwise been a challenge.
In conclusion, Awake O Harp has a balance that many makes it a great daily devotional. It seeks to comfort and exhort the individual without compromising historical accuracy or context. It keeps the focus on God, not ourselves and tries to get the reader to pray and meditate on the Psalm in their lives, not just read a couple pages and forget about it. After hearing me talk about the book, my mother decided she would give it a go and she started reading it. Within a couple weeks, each member of the woman's group she is in at church had their own copy of Awake O Harp and they love the way the book presents the Scriptures. Now, whenever I see someone in need of a personal devotion, whether they finished one or have yet to begin, I strongly recommend Awake O Harp to them. Dr. Varner should find great encouragement in knowing how many lives he has touched through this book; I know it has affected mine.
Anyone looking for a good devotion on the Psalms should definitely buy this book!
