Great for the GRE

This book was my bible for writing the Issue and Argument essays on the GRE. I scored 5.0 (out of 6.0) on the analytical writing section and you can decide for yourself whether that score is a worthy result from using this book. Considering that I struggle with standardized tests, I commend the author for writing a useful and comprehensive book for GRE essay composition--I can't speak for the GMAT. The book provided valuable pointers for planning, outlining, and writing my essays. I used the book in conjunction with a printout of the essay topic pools from the ETS website. As the author states, these current essay topics for both the Issue and Argument essays are vital tools for practicing both essays.
The author (I say "author" because I couldn't find an author other than the Thompson/Peterson publishers) gives a structure for timing each stage of the essay process. Planning the Issue Essay, for example, included: five minutes for brainstorming and outlining; 30 minutes for composing; and 10 minutes for review. It was the brainstorm and outline planning I found particularly helpful for both essays.
For the Argument essay, outlining advice included quickly listing the evidence presented and then analyzing it. For outlining the Issue essay, the author suggests using a pro-versus-con technique for brainstorming both sides of the topic. Both approaches helped me to quickly organize ideas. As I practiced more, I got away from the suggested outlining and started to develop my own style, but the book's structure gave me a strong foundation to start with.
As far as the example essays in the back of the book, they are not written under a time constraint and are probably beyond what is possible to write under timed conditions. But the author acknowledges this and offers the essays as ideal examples for reference. Given that they are so well-crafted, I found them useful to read for structure and diction.
This book taught me a new term: "to qualify." Qualifying an Issue statement, I learned, means you don't completely agree or disagree with the statement and write your essay accordingly. This method, described as "hedging your position," was new to me and I would have liked a better explanation. That's my only complaint about this great tool for GRE essay preparation.

De-mystifies the GRE writing section.

This book helped me score a 5.5 out of 6 on the writing portion. When I first began studying fot the GRE, I was intimidated by all the elements of the writing section: a vast pool of vague topics, impossible time limits, and my own cluttered opinions. I found Peterson's guide to be a practical refresher on rhetoric, fine tuned for maximum performance on the 45 minute and 30 minute essays.

My first few practice essays were rushed and unclear. On the day of the exam, I found myself with EXTRA time to edit and even add an extra paragraph. This could not have happened without Peterson.

I located this book at the public library a few days before the GRE- one of the best preparation decisions I made. It prompted me how to use supporting examples without letting them become cumbersome, develop a nuanced but clear line of reasoning, and skillfully deconstruct the arguments given in the argument-analysis portion.

This book might be a few years old, but its contents far outperform Barron's 2006/7 section on the GRE writing portion. I recommend using Barron's for everything else (verbal, quantitative tips and review, and the practice tests)- but complement your study with Peterson's book.

Also, I would recommend checking out the A&E video series "Biography of the Millennium: 100 People, 1000 Years" for an overview of western culture and history. It supplies some great examples to use in your essay.

Great book for GMAT AWA, especially for non-native speakers

This is the best GMAT AWA prep book around. It is even more helpful to the non-native speakers who have not been trained in writting essays in English. I, a non-native speaker, used this book to prepare for AWA and scored 5.5 (90 percentile). Moreover, this book not only teaches you how to write for the AWA, but also teaches you real writing techniques that can be used in your everyday job and life.
A job well done, Mark Alan Stewart (the author)! Kudos to you!

Grade 5-8-Joe and Katie play a popular fantasy card game, DragonSteel, whenever and wherever they can. When Joe finds a computer game based on their favorite pastime, the two friends can't wait to try it out. They soon discover that it's not really a computer game, but instead a gateway into the world of Komondor, an alternate universe full of characters who look like "Japanimations" (Japanese-style cartoons with big hair, giant eyes, etc.). The youngsters must find all five pieces of the DragonSteel Amulet before an evil emperor uses them to take over Komondor and Earth. Written in a lighthearted tone and packed with amusing puns, this fast-paced adventure is filled with action that is over the top and enjoyable. The characters are shallow, but believable. DragonSteel closely resembles Pok‚mon or Yu-Gi-Oh, and will seem familiar to many readers. The black-and-white illustrations, which look like cookie-cutter Japanese anime, fit well with the narrative. Don't think too much while reading or you'll lose the moment. If you need fun fantasy books, and you already have the top-of-the-line authors (Douglas Adams, Roald Dahl, Dav Pilkey, Lemony Snicket, and Terry Pratchett), this is a good choice for second string.

Middle-school sweethearts Joe and Katie are thrilled when they find a CD-ROM version of DragonSteel, their favorite trading card game. It turns out that the CD is a portal to the DragonSteel world, a parallel universe where everyday life is just like a video game, including "PowerUp" bonuses and lifespan indicator orbs that hover over combatants during battles. Joe and Katie--transformed into Japanimation characters--must fulfill an ancient prophecy by reuniting the scattered pieces of a powerful amulet. Joined by another boy and girl, the adventurers face the usual beasts and evil enchanters but also less-exotic problems, such as a computer glitch that keeps shutting down their portal and typical junior-high worries about who likes whom. The characters are thinly developed and the illustrations unsophisticated, but there's appeal enough in Osterweil's spoof of genres near and dear to preteen boys. Jennifer Mattson

Transported into a world of dragons where the goal is to locate a five-piece amulet, the two travel a dangerous world in their leisure time, struggle with the questions of parents and friends when not at play - and wonder what will happen if they fail. The Amulet Of Komondor is a riveting story of a computer game gone awry.

About the Author

S Ramnarayan, PhD, is Clinical Professor of Business at the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad, India. A PhD in Organizational Behavior from the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, he has been a faculty member at the Tata Management Training Centre, Pune, India, for about 5 years and later a Professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India, for about 13 years. He has also been a visiting faculty at the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, and Guest Professor at the University of Bamberg, Germany.

He has worked in different sectors on a variety of assignments in the areas of organization development, change, and leadership. He has carried out assignments funded by different international agencies, such as US Office of Personnel Management, Ford Foundation, World Bank, Commonwealth Secretariat, Department for International Development, and German Science Foundation. T. V. Rao is currently the Chairman of T. V. Rao Learning Systems Pvt. Ltd, Ahmedabad. He was a Professor at Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) between 1973 and 1994 and, subsequently, Adjunct/Visiting Professor until 2014. He is the Founder President of the National HRD Network (NHRDN), and the First Honorary Director of the Academy of HRD, India. He was also the President of the Indian Society for Applied Behavioral Science (ISABS). Dr Rao has worked as an HRD Advisor to the Reserve Bank of India, has assisted the Administrative Reforms Commission in reviewing the personnel management practices for civil services, and has also served as a member of the HRM Review Committee of Nationalised Banks set up by the Ministry of Finance. Dr Rao has worked as a short-term consultant to UNESCO, Ministry of Health, Indonesia; National Entrepreneurial Development Association, Malaysia; and the Commonwealth Secretariat, London. Dr Rao has over 50 books to his credit, of which 15 are authored jointly with Dr Udai Pareek.

About the Author

Andrew Cooksy is a chemistry professor at San Diego State University, where he teaches courses in physical and general chemistry and carries out research on the spectroscopy, kinetics, and computational chemistry of reactive intermediates in combustion and interstellar processes. He attended the Washington, D.C. public schools before receiving his undergraduate degree in chemistry and physics from Harvard College and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley.

The book attempts to simplify the understanding of Quantum Chemistry. I feel that it is trying to hard to make the book accessible to students. The approach to Quantum Chemistry could have been better. The oversimplification instead overcomplicates. This is an upper division course and I feel that the class should have been gear toward giving a thorough explanation. It is that happy medium between giving a complete answer with pages of proof or giving the main points.
