About the Author
Mick Berry has been playing drums for over 30 years, having studied with such legends as New Orleans drummers James Black and John Vidacovich, and Afro-Cuban drummer Walfredo Reyes, Sr. He has accompanied such renown artists/groups as Henry Butler, Eddie Henderson, Michael Wolff, E.C. Scott, The Spiral Starecase, The New Leviathan Oriental Foxtrot Orchestra, The San Francisco Mime Troupe and The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival. He currently resides in San Francisco where he performs and records with numerous bands playing a wide range of styles: jazz, blues, Latin jazz, R&B, orchestra pit, rock, and country. Jason Gianni has been a session drummer, teacher and performer in the Bay Area for close to a decade. His work can be heard on a wide variety of TV and radio commercials, and most notably, the theme song for the popular children's cartoon, SpongeBob Squarepants. Jason is the featured drummer on the fall 2003 release of the progressive rock band Magellan's new recording entitled Impossible Figures on InsideOut records. As a writer, his work has appeared in Modern Drummer magazine as well as the West coast "Jazz" Steps newsletter.

Maybe not Drummer's 'Bible'...

This book is pretty good at introducing the student to a variety of drumming styles and techniques. Where it falls short though is that it doesn't really go into much detail on any particular style, and the accompanying CD includes certain examples that are played so fast (and with less than fantastic production), that it's hard to follow along. It would have been better if they played the examples at a variety of tempos to allow the student to more accurately discern the voices and nuances of the rhythm.

That being said, the book is probably what it is meant to be - a brief overview and taste of many different styles - not intended to provide in depth analysis of any particular style.

This holds true both for design and verification computation. However, the motion of the fluids is never in parallel flow or counter flow in heat exchangers and in tube banks. Instead, it is rather complex and consists of a combination of various cross flows. Hence, a precise design of the above components requires, on a case-by-case basis, the availability of the value of certain crucial factors or of corrective factors so as to make it possible to use the equations relative to parallel flow or counter flow. A pleasure to read

The Persian Empire has been a neglected subject in ancient history. J.M. Cook does justice to the Persians in writing this cohesive, erudite history. The author emphasizes Persian political and military history, but also includes chapters on religion, art, and social customs. This reader learns that Persian hegemony extended to Babylon, Egypt, Asia, and Parthia. One of the most interesting subjects includes information about Persian interaction with the Medes (Iranians). The footnotes added to my reading enjoyment and a useful appendix outlines the kings' lineage. As added features, the maps and illustrations provide me with a pictorial guide through ancient Persia. The Persian Empire remains a thorough, useful book to understand these ancient people of the Near East.

It's just o.k.

It does seem that the subject of the Persian Empire is often considered as an exclusive subject; the discussion seems to always be in the shadow of the discussion of ancient Greece, as if Persian was the understudy of the main historical actor. On the good side, TPE makes the Persians the star of the show. On the bad side, the writing is somewhat uninspired, making it a tedious read. Also, Cook seems to take quite a bit from Herodotus which begs the question: is the reader better off simply reading the original. (If you have not yet seen the Landmark edition of _The Histories_, I would highly recommend it.) Also, the book as a whole feels choppy and disjointed. Perhaps this is a source-problem (or lack-of-sources problem) or maybe it is just bad writing--I can't say.

Overall, I would not recommend this book for the casual reader. If, for some reason, you have a specialized interest in the subject, then I might be worth getting.

Avoid B&N edition

The original edition has excellent B&W plates omitted in the Barnes and Noble 1993 edition. I was unaware that a publisher would ever do that, and I bought the wrong edition. How can they omit the photographs?
The book itself (when it has the photos) is very good. It is only the B&N version that I suggest avoiding.
