Logical Thinking with Patterns

This is Cuisenaire's companion book to the pattern blocks and it is wonderful! It contains 26 animal problem-solving puzzles, one for each letter of the alphabet. It was fun to figure out what blocks were necessary to cover each animal. This book also comes with directions for 20 activities relating to the animals that involve counting, estimating, sorting, symmetry, sequencing and visual/spatial awareness. This book, for grades 1-3, is a real gem and is reproducible!

This is a very helpful book for my 5 year old. He uses this as part of our math program. It teaches logical thinking and spatial skills. He even used the idea and created animals of his own using the pattern blocks!

Reading this latest offering of poetry and short prose pieces from Native American writer Alexie ( The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven ), it's easy to see why his work has garnered so much attention. Working from a carefully developed understanding of his place in an oppressed culture, he focuses on the need to tear down obstacles before nature tears them down. Fire is therefore a central metaphor: a sister and brother-in-law killed, a burnt hand, cars aflame. Tongue in cheek, Alexie inserts images from popular songs and movies, and catalogues aspects of traditional reservation life that have been sacrificed in America's melting pot. "After 500 years of continuous lies / I would still sign treaties for you," he says in one of this volume's many love poems--a love so powerful it threatens to engulf readers as well. Alexie renews the nearly forgotten sense of language equaling power. And the language in these sequential works is flawless, each section picking up from and expanding upon the previous one, poetry and prose working naturally together. "Imagination is all we have as defense against capture and its inevitable changes," he writes. And he proves his point.

Outraged pride, broken promises, and the scourge of alcoholism are the burden of these sharp-edged, high-impact poems, prose poems, mini-essays, and fragments of stories woven together in a tapestry of pain about death by fire and survival by endurance on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Memories of great Indian chiefs, "fancydancers," powwow campfires, and "some Crazy Horse dream," set against cruelty toward Native Americans, reveal "what went wrong with our love." Caught between alien white and disintegrated Native American cultures, "homeless and hopeful," Alexie uses the "magic and loss" of song and story to forge an "entire identity" out of anger and the nightmare of racism. Despite pain, this moving work celebrates something that can't be killed by cavalry swords, Thunderbird wine, "fake ceremonies," or "continuous lies": there is "nothing more beautiful than snow fallen onto the dark hair and braids of these Spokane Indians." About the Author
Sherman Alexie's poems, fiction, essays and films have won him an international following since his first book, THE BUSINESS OF FANCYDANCING, was published in 1992. Alexie's awards include the Stranger Genius Award in Literature, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards for Excellence in Children's Literature in Fiction, and the National Book Award for Young People's Literature as well as honors and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Foundation, and a citation as "One of 20 Best American Novelists Under the Age of 40" from Granta magazine. The Many Voices of Sherman Alexie

Sherman Alexi is an in-your-face poet, there's no doubt about it. He has a voice that demands to be heard, and you will listen, even unwillingly. His style is unique, mixing short, terse lines of verse alternating with long lines of prose that carry contrasts of charged emotion against the calming voice of reason. It is not an easy read. There are harsh truths, but truths that need to be addressed and heeded. His voice is the voice of many and the voice of few, but all demand you hear them. Powerful and moving.When I finished reading it, I felt as if I'd been shot in the back with many arrows and was left carrying around holes in my heart.

Excellent Technique

A very sad collection of pieces by Alexie, covering all manner of topics of res life. More impressive, however, is his use of style and technique in these works. Sometimes in traditional poem format, sometimes in prose writing, flirting with fiction storytelling. Around every page is a new experience. This is a great collection.

Wonderful source for keeping up-to-date with latest trends of communication

Well, what can I say, I simply love the book. It has reminded me that when it comes to communication, we are all human beings not machines. We have feelings and different situations at every moment of our lives; we need to remember all this when deciding to play the communication game.

To some, the elements of communication mentioned in the book are taken for granted basics but, for some others, it is a guideline to learn how to communicate better. Simply put, not every one is born with the give of "gap-ping". Let it be face-to-face conversations, emails, letters, blogs, IM and/or all other ways of communications, we must have some guidelines.

This text provides the reader with the guidance of learning basic to professional techniques of communication; not only do we learn how to use clarity, conciseness, etiquette when writing to others, but also teach us to learn to recognize the audience which, in a era of globalization, is of most importance. The authors of the books point out our cultural diversities and remind us to treat each other with respect, patience and understanding.

I could say much more of the text, but as you probably figured out, I am a student and have only read up to Chapter 7. So much to read, so much to learn! I am so thrilled to have come across this book and be able to keep up with the trends of communication and the reminder, that unfortunately, we all need once in a while when it comes to communicate with each other. This book not only applies to professional life but every day life as well. I could go on and on with the thoughts this book has provoked in me but, maybe, I will get back with more to say once I finish reading the book. Do not miss the chance to read it!

How Did This Book Make It To The 8th Edition?

If you are a college professor or instructor, please do not use this book. A far more accessible and technically correct book for your students would be Dale Carnegie's The Leader In You (How To Win Friends and Influence People). While Carnegie's book does not have "reading exercises" like a traditional textbook might, your students will get far more out of reading his book than Bovee's.

I am a senior in college and my Communication for Business Professionals course is using this textbook as the primary learning resource. I feel this book was a waste of my money due to the number of content faults in the 8th Edition. I have not reviewed nor read previous editions.

A major gripe I have with this book is incorrect statements, a polite way of saying the author did not fact-check and proof-read their work. Again, this book is in its 8th Edition and the current layout of this book is discouraging considering the book is supposed to be about communication. I accumulated a list of content faults regarding this book, and will try to share some of them with you to help dissaude you from wasting your money on this book:

(1) Indirectly referring to the United States as a high-context culture, stating that high-context cultures prefer very strict schedules. A few pages earlier, the book contradicts this statement by directly detailing how the United States is a low-context culture.

(2) The book constantly mixes up its point-of-view on what the best way to approach others is. Earlier on, it suggests its important to consider your own feelings first. A few chapters later, it scalds you for putting yourself before others and on several occasions reminds you that "earlier" in the text it referred to how important talking in terms of others desires is. What is the better way? Well, having read Dale Carnegie's book on leadership, I can tell you the best approach is always to "bait the hook to suit the fish" as Carnegie would say. In other words, address your audiences needs before you take into account your own feelings.

There is a famous anecdote of Japanese and American businessman sitting across the table from one another negotiating a business deal. After the American finishes discussing his business proposal, he is unnerved by the silence of the Japanese negotiators to the point where he believes something is wrong. The end result, and conclusion of this anecdote, is the American perceived the need to devoid the silence by talking more. In the process, the American lowered his demands and the Japanese negotiators then agreed once the American backed himself into a corner.

The only complete book of business communication

I did enjoy every page of this book, although I haven't read all of them. It's more an encyclopedia, which you may use in your day-to-day business, than something you will read straight through over the weekend. Very valuable and up-to-date were the chapters about intercultural and e-mail communication. Strong recommendation.

A complete resource.

I'm only a beginner but this book seems to have plenty of well illustrated information.
This is 4 books in one (for : Guitar Theory, Fretboard knowledge, Eartraining, Sightreading). One great thing is that it has links of chapters from 3 of the other sections so your learning is very wholesome. My guitar teacher made this recommendation and he say it has information similar to a Music degree syllabus.

I found the book to be an excellent tutorial for the novice ocean fisherman and a great reference guide fot the more experienced fisherman.

The author writes as if he were talking directly to you on your level.I think this is a great book to keep on-board the boat. rjc/MD

Offshore Pursuit ... a great catch!

Interested in venturing further into deeper waters in my fishing experiences, after reading "Offshore Pursuit", felt I had found the secret recipe for successful fishing. Although not a very experienced fisherperson, found the tidbits and instructions easy to understand and apply It was very informative and will be a reference for more successful trips ahead. Highly recommend for any fisherman desiring to catch the big one(s)!

I've been fishing offshore for close to 20 years and wish I had read this book long ago. There are great tips for necomers to the sport as well as those who consider themselves experienced. I recommend this book to anyone who is going to fish offshore. It is an easy read and will help you catch more fish. Great Book

Not just for preppers

I just finished reading this amazing book! It is one of the most comprehensive guides that I have read (and I have read many). It truly is an encyclopedia of self medical care and is over 900 pages LONG!!! He teaches the reader how to make soap, wound-care products, insecticide, sun block, toothpaste and so much more. It includes how to set up an emergency medical chest, with descriptions of everything you need to treat any medical problem that could arise. It also has a great reading list to further explore any of the subjects he writes about. Best of all, it's easy to read and understand!!!

This book is an encyclopedic length reference manual of over 900 pages , including everything you need to know to treat any medical problem from routine fevers to snakebites , there is even a chapter on Ebola .
The section on how to build your own medical chest is especially helpful so you will be able to treat problems when there are no doctors or medicine available. There is a large section on nutrition and how to grow healthy plants from the soil up . It also teaches you how to make everything you will need in a survival situation.....Soap, toothpaste, sunblock....For the Preppers, it is an awesome reference! For EVERYONE...it is an awesome
guide to everyday needs too. VERY INTERESTING read...Prepper or not!

This is an incredibly well-informed book which exceeds its intentions; the information is helpful for all situations, not just a post apocalyptic scenario. Whether you are an avid boater, private pilot, camper, hunter, or outdoorsman of any kind, the knowledge embedded throughout this book will prove itself useful. This should be a staple of anyone’s bug-out bag or home first-aid kit. It is written in such a way that is understandable to everyone, not just those in the medical profession. Definitely worth its weight — and it weighs a lot :-P

Enjoyable read, especially being from the south.

You will think about the characters in this story long after you finish the last page. Is love strong enough to overcome death? Or would Charlie have to die to make it really possible? I finished the book with a strong desire to visit this town in Georgia to see if I could find the house merely by following the descriptions in the book, which are so detailed that it must be based on a specific place. It will be an adventure to try, anyway! An enjoyable read that will make you feel like you actually visited a small town in the south.
