This is a light and entertaining book from a word-play genius. What is amazing is the way he weaves so many stories into a tidy, compact little package - almost the size of a pack of cigarettes, as a matter of fact.
This is a story about a tarnished princess, an outlaw bomber with bad teeth, a scene stealing if somewhat undomesticated loyal servant, toads - both real and plastic, an exiled King and his "Oh-Oh, spaghetti-o" Queen, a CIA not-so-secret agent, an outraged Middle Eastern playboy, blackberries, Camels, Ralph Nader, pyramids and aliens from Argon.
What more could you possibly want in a book?
Tom Robbins has a genuine talent for words and puns, and those with active funny bones will be tickled throughout. His casual use of words like "slishy" and phrases like "I have a black belt in haiku" abound, to be discovered with unbridled delight.

I Liked It But...

Let me start by saying this is my first book that I have read from this author and though I liked the writing style and overall dialog, I felt the book came up short in the end tying loose ends and answering enough questions. It jusf left me feeling incomplete. SLIGHT SPOILERZ AHEAD!!!

Basic story...two peopld meet on a plane: humble Teri and rich playgirl Gina. Teri wants someone to be with on Christmas and Gina just wants Teri. Throw in a few complications and you got yourself a good plot.

So why only 3 stars? The two main characters spend about 50% of the book apart and I didn't feel thejr initial connections portrayed enough to me or had enough depth shown for the year of longing apart. Then when they are reunited after a year I wasn't given enough dialog or interaction between the two to feel the connection (it was established in a few paragraphs). Plus the beginning didnt tie to the end...the first gifts what happened to them, what is the real story behind Insa and Gina, what happens after...

I did like the book. Will I reread it...probably not. Do I regret reading it...no way. This wasn't my full cup of tea but I did enjoy the few hours I spent reading it.

Excellent Mix of Theory and Practical Information

As a longtime writer and educator, I came across Thomas Vogel’s book while seeking a primer about the underlying tenets that govern creativity. I appreciate theory but I was also looking for a practical guide that would give me insights into what makes creativity work and how to maximize in others. I found this book to be extremely useful --still research based without clobbering me with data. His theory that creativity is worth discovering and identifying in every person is beautifully rendered. And the cost of failing to do so is clearly high. The other huge takeaway is how Vogel shows that creativity grows from “practice” with excellent instruction on ways to integrate it into a busy life. Vogel writes clearly and well. I wasn’t surprised that he is a professor at Emerson where he must have honed his ideas and advice to a sharp edge. I’ve utilized his writing to launch an arts program for at-risk teens. Our results have been outstanding. Vogel deserves a chunk of credit.

Breakthrough Thinking is one of the most important books I now require my advertising students to read. It opens the mind and allows the students to foster their own creativity in a variety of different ways that may have been shut off since childhood. Before using this book for my courses the students would tell me they are not creative and have no way to become creative. I now have students that read this book front to back before I have even assigned chapters. I see students discover opportunities in the field of creative advertising after having read this book. Overall, this is a book that I think advertising educators have been waiting to place in the hands of their students. Hats off to Mr. Vogel for writing one of the most important books in the education of creative awakening.

Mike Silver is a Professor of Chemistry at Hope College. He received his B.S. in chemistry from Fairleigh Dickinson University and his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Cornell University. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, past president of the West Michigan Section, and a member of the Council of Undergraduate Research. He has received the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award for excellence in teaching and research and the Provost's Award for Teaching Excellence. Currently he is involved in collaborative research with the Dow Corning Chemical Company.

In my experience, this is one of the few chemistry textbooks which explains WHY as opposed to simply presenting isolated formulas and factoids for students to memorize. It is terrific for visual-spatial learners and for students who want the big picture as well as the details. The organization of the textbook is logical, with one subject leading into the next.

Probably a great book for someone wanting to get into or expand their knowledge on professional guitar finishing. Covers every aspect of guitar finishing to some degree (some aspects way more than others). Is directed at people who want to replicate the old school finishes and be able to duplicate traditional guitar finishes, and have access to materials and tools that the people like myself doing a limited number of guitars are not going to be able to invest in. The format of the book is not to my taste as there are hardly any pictures showing anything, and it seems to jump around quite a bit, although this seems to fit in with the general theory of guitar finishing in that all that exists in certainty is bare wood and a finished product. After doing a lot of research (including reading this book cover to cover 5-7 times), it seems that for every individual there is a different sequence of doing things with different kinds of products with differing amounts, times, etc. The author doesn't wrap this up for you as he kind of glances and breezes through multiple ways of doing things, interspersing history and helpful tips/lessons throughout in a not-completely-logical order at times. There are a number of recipes but these are aimed at replicating traditional finishes, and there is little in the way of making someone who is inexperienced feel confident in trying to do something different. It gives good advice on the pros and cons of certain techniques or materials, but one is left wondering "so what do I want to use then????"lol. A final PITA (although it is not the book's fault), is that only specialty stores (limiting to mail-order/internet for many) stock anything that you need, from the recommended sandpapers to the various other materials, grain filler (nobody around here even knows what that is), etc. so you might as well make sure you have a stewmac or woodcraft acount before even getting started on any of this.

Best for: professional guitar finishers (including those still working their way there) that have professional spray equipment (or access), and some prior finishing experience who want to know everything they can about the history, materials, and applications of guitar finishing.

Good for: People wanting to get a professional quality traditional guitar finish that have access to and/or are willing to invest in a bunch of tools and supplies to do a great job, and/or guitar buffs who want to know all this stuff.

Not so good for: People without a lot of extra money who have no access to tools or materials, and who want to do a professional quality finish. Also may have little to no interest in the history of finishing....... or reading.

Worst for: Poor people with no access to tools or materials who want to do creative (as in weird creative), nontraditional, or "wrong" finishes, and could care less about how Fender or Gibson cover up perfectly beautiful wood with tone-sucking paint.

Being a beginning luthier but not an idiot I found this book to be the perfect mix of basic practical information and comprehensive, in-depth theories and techniques. It is very well-written and easy to read.

About the Author
J. Harrison Watts, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Applied Cultural and Social Sciences Department at Our Lady of the Lake University University, San Antonio, Texas. Harrison's research interests are in legal issues surrounding criminal law. He is the author of numerous book chapters, journal articles, and instructors' resource manuals to accompany textbooks.


Cliff Roberson LLM, Ph.D., is an emeritus professor of criminal justice at Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas. Previously he served for four years as the editor in chief of the Professional Issues in Criminal Justice Journal. In 2009, a research study conducted by a group of professors from Sam Houston State University determined that Cliff Roberson was the leading criminal justice author in the United States based on his publications and their relevance to the profession [See Southwest Journal of Criminal Justice, Vol. 6, Issue 1, 2009]. He has authored or co-authored over 50 books and texts on legal subjects.

This book was very informative and clear! I wasn't overwhelmed with the information it provided and I actually read the whole thing (with the exception of a chapter) and that rarely happens. I definitely recommend this book. I rented the e-book, it was reasonably priced and very helpful.

Review of Background Material: contains review material to aid understanding of digital control analysis and design. Examples include discussion of discrete-time systems in time domain and frequency domain (reviewed from linear systems course) and root locus design in s-domain and z-domain (reviewed from feedback control course).

Inclusion of Advanced Topics
In addition to the basic topics required for a one semester senior/graduate class, the text includes some advanced material to make it suitable for an introductory graduate level class or for two quarters at the senior/graduate level. Examples of optional topics are state-space methods, which may receive brief coverage in a one semester course, and nonlinear discrete-time systems.

Minimal Mathematics Prerequisites
The mathematics background required for understanding most of the book is based on what can be reasonably expected from the average electrical, chemical or mechanical engineering senior. This background includes three semesters of calculus, differential equations and basic linear algebra. Some texts on digital control require more mathematical maturity and are therefore beyond the reach of the typical senior.

I bought this book for a class and there is a ton of errors in example problems as well as other places in the book. My teacher had to provide us with a large pdf of book corrections.
