This book is basically a summary of western civ. It does tell about some things that I never knew. I don't find it completely boring, but then I love history so that may be why. At the end of each chapter is a suggested reading list and I think I will be using this later on to learn more on my own about specific things. This was bought for a Western Civ. class.

Drawing on evidence from the European Union (with comparisons to other industrialized countries including the United States and Canada), the authors demonstrate that the effective retirement age is influenced by social security regulations (such as a change in eligibility age) and discuss ways of measuring these embedded incentives. Fenge and Pestieau examine the implicit taxes on prolonged working life from normative and political economy perspectives. They discuss optimal payroll tax rates that minimize distortions of labor supply and retirement decisions and consider alternative ways to finance benefits, including consumption and capital income taxation. They discuss why policies are designed to discourage employment among older workers and why reforms to counter this often meet resistance. They demonstrate, contrary to the belief of many European governments, that pushing older workers into retirement does not free jobs for young unemployed workers. They show that the gap between salaries and productivity is an incentive for employers to rid themselves of older workers and argue that governments should not support this behavior by compensating older workers for the difference between severance payments and salaries in early retirement programs.

A seminal volume on management strategy; a must-read for anyone in any/every level of management.

One of the most highly influential business books I have ever read (and I have read many). This seminal volume is (only slightly) dated now, but the ideas and philosophies in it are still pure gold. This should be required reading in the first semester of every MBA program (in fact, I understand it is in a few). As a strategic planning consultant (not my primary career--I do it purely for fun; I am a psychotherapist), I often ask my clients to read this. It is of immense value for entrepreneurs and management, as well as anyone hoping to be promoted into management. If you want to lead, this is a great place to start building that skill set.

210 Tips Tricks and Observations on Wow

Tom Peters is one of the high priests of the 21st Century Business Revolution. This book, now nearly 20 years old, contains still relevant observations on developing your career, leadership, learning and education, management foibles, globalization, innovation, diversity, competition and many other elements of business and life that seemingly struck Peters while he was writing.

The approach of the book itself is a little offbeat, with Peters' common approach of multi-font typesets, photos, quotes and interviews, off the wall comments and seemingly random or disjointed observations. This book, unlike some of his others, suffers a bit from this randomization, and the readability is impacted somewhat.

The content, however, once you get past the organization of the book, is top shelf. The observations Peters made 20 years ago held up to the test of time, particularly his globalization observations on Malaysia and India (though he missed the mark on Indonesia and China). By standing the test of time well, and with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, it gives the book greater gravitas for those elements that you may need to or want to put into practice in your own life, career or business. It also adds credence to Peters more recent works.

This book should be on the reading list of any manager who is looking to move beyond average and pursue a "wow" career.

Tom Peters writes an excellent book. He wrote this book years ago but the ideas still hold true for today! This is excellent whether you are or aren't an out of the box thinker on service but it really gets you thinking and excited about the service industry. So many people out there could learn so much in this day and age. This was easy reading and very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it. One of the best books I have read and that means a lot.

This is a great book from world renowned researchers on convex optimization

This is a great book from world renowned researchers on convex optimization. This book goes into both the theory of convex optimization and its applications. Convex optimization has many untapped potential applications in active portfolio management and this book covers some applications that are not discussed in other resources. It is a great and easy read as well, of course if you are familiar with linear algebra.

Explore the many sides of Edward Lee

Warning: I'm a big Edward Lee fan so this review may not be totally objective. This short collection gives a good overview of various kinds of stories that Mr. Lee is known for. "The Stick Woman" is dark, bleak, and over-the-top disgusting. "The Sea-Slop Thing" gives the lighter side of the gross-out and contains some of the author's trademark explicit and unnatural sex scenes. What really got me excited about Terra Insanus are the reprints of the hard to find linked stories "Sh*t-house" and "The Ushers." These pieces are not typical of Edward Lee, but they seem to be his most personal. These angry and nihilistic stream-of-consciousness tales are just as effective and unsettling as when I first read them years ago. Unfortunately they have been updated a bit with some modern references (I hate when authors feel they have to do this), but they have lost none of their impact. Obviously fans will be getting this regardless, but new readers should do themselves a favor and discover the different facets of a modern master of horror. 5 stars (obviously!).

So, on the same day, I read this whole book and watched that Blackfish documentary about the orcas … on top of other events in the news. You know what I did then? I turned off the television, stepped away from the internet, and spent the rest of the evening cuddling with my kitties.

Wow, we are an awful species. I mean, we go out of our way, WAY out of our way, to be vile. To commit atrocities that by rights should be unimaginable. And we do it a lot. A LOT a lot.

I’m telling you, as fun as most Edward Lee books can be – for those values of fun involving infernal torment, otherworldy abominations, and outrageously hilarious depravity – Terra Insanus is 75% not that.

25% yes; the last story, “The Sea-Slop Thing,” is classic Lee at his weird-sextastic gooshiness. Thankfully. How wrong is it to be RELIEVED to see a story about a lady who starts off doing something wildly inappropriate with a huge sausage from the deli where she works and goes on to find herself confronting a squelchy horror from beyond the deep?

Yet, there it was, and I was glad and relieved. Because the 75% prior to that was mighty damn bleak and altogether horrifying in a much-too-real way. Those vile atrocities that should be unimaginable, which we inflict and commit upon each other at a dismayingly regular basis, get a harsh spotlight of attention.

Well, okay, “The Stick-Woman” isn’t … uh … no, it IS that nasty, a tale of a woman held prisoner by a husband who goes far beyond any sane definition of abusive. But at least that one has more of a buffer, more of that only-a-story buffer.

“Sh*t House” and “The Ushers,” on the other hand … two fit-together pieces of a warped mirror casting fragmented reflections of the worst of the worst … part stream-of-consciousness, part uncomfortably autobiographical-seeming, part ripped-from-the-headlines … stuff like this (not Lee’s writing, but the subject matter and the fact of the truth of the subject matter) really can make a person think an extinction event can’t come soon enough.

Yeah. Bleak. Powerful, dark, despairing, and bleak. Even the diabolical brushes and undertones in “The Ushers” don’t allow for much fantastical wiggle-room. If anything, it serves to twist the knife. We can go on all we want about how the devil made us do it, but deep down we all know better.

About the Author
J. Edwin Hartill was professor of Bible at Northwestern College for almost four decades, from 1944 until his death in 1981. Over the years he taught Doctrine, Old and New Testament Survey, Biblical Hermeneutics, Pre- and Post-Exile Prophets, Minor Prophets, Daniel, Revelation and many other book studies. Dr. Hartill was the host of 'Bible Nuggets' which aired for 32 years on Northwestern Radio and other stations around the country. He also spoke at summer conferences and ministered throughout the United States.

The indispensible volume for teaching Bible study methods

J. Edwin Hartill (1) names the principle, (2) defines it, (3) illustrates it, (4) provides notable quotes about the advantages gained by using it, and then (5) provides Biblical examples of how to apply it. The book's outline format does not require long, academic reading assignments. Instead, it encourages the student to practice the principles the book teaches by reading and studying the Biblical text. Both in an academic setting and within the Christian Education program of the local church, Hartill's book lends itself to courses in Bible Study Methods. Each principle links easily to a study skill, allowing the student to learn multiple skills simultaneously. For instance, by assigning a short word study along with practice in "the First Mention Principle," the teacher helps the student discover the authorial intent for the meaning of the word or concept, and then see it borne out through "the general teaching of the Scriptures."
During a teaching trip, I once was asked to teach a Bible study for employees of a large corporation in Honolulu. None of the participants had any background in Bible Study methods, let alone a grasp of Biblical interpretation. So I recommended they get Hartill's book and use it as a study manual. Several years later I met one of those people at a seminar on the mainland. Some of the Bible Study participants had gone on to become teachers, and all had grown in their Christian walk. My friend attributed their growth to the principles they learned by studying the Bible using J. Edwin Hartill's book.

Review: Principles of Biblical Hermeneutics

I'm glad I bought this book. It had good information and its format made it easy to digest (outlines) without a lot of effort. With that said, I agree with other reviews I had read before purchasing that it appears the author does not apply his own methods. A number of analysis and applications in the text did not appear to follow good practices and therefore generated concerns about the validity of the author's conclusions.
With that said, I believe in the sincerity of the author. However, I would more strongly recommend Henry Virkler and Karelynne Ayayo's text on Hermenuetics. It is a more scholarly work in my opinion and much more consistent in it's application.

I was a student of Dr. Hartill's at Northwestern College in Roseville. While there I took many of his courses including Bible Survey, Hermeneutics, and Revelation. That was close to 40 years ago! The ONLY college textbook I still own and use is this one.

We used to joke but it was true, that if you dropped your pencil you lost a page of notes. He told us regarding his book on Hermeneutics, if you want an 'A'- memorize the whole thing.

I am not sure I totally agree with everything in his book today - and I don't know that he would either. As you study scripture, you continue to learn. One day after class I approached him regarding predestination in Romans. He was of one opinion, and I of another. I have since changed my mind on the subject! I keep studying the Bible and don't use modern commentaries (prefer the much older ones). However, this is a very good resource and I refer to it a few times a year.
