Why am I here? What is my purpose? Is this what my life is supposed to be?

Great questions! Jon Gordon's new book, The Seed, helps readers discover the answer. Through a wonderful story about a man given a two week leave of absence by his employer to, essentially, contemplate and renew his commitment to his job, we learn a method to explore our own satisfaction and find our purpose. The keys are, first, being open to discovery and, second, being open to the possibility that we may already be living our purpose but are missing the realization of, and passion for, that.

The story is a simple and engaging read. If you have previously read Gordon's The Energy Bus, you will recognize the appearance of George, and the positive lessons he brings to a discussion about purpose. As with other Gordon books, there are quotable quotes about life, work, and attitude and a simple to understand process to take away and implement.

The four stages of finding one's purpose are taught through the main character's life experiences, his dog, and a mysterious farmer. As Gordon repeatedly does so well in all of his writing, he takes a significant life challenge and presents it in an easy to relate to story, with important lessons presented in such a manner that the reader doesn't realize the reflection and learning that is inspired. As with his other books, there will also be a discussion guide and action plan available on the website soon.

I must admit, I am a Jon Gordon fan. I own all of the books he has written, I have led a transformative, positively energizing book club at work for The Energy Bus, and I rank him among my favorite authors. I love the fable style story, especially when the story applies to live in general, not just work life. If you're feeling lost, stuck and unhappy, this is your book!

I loved this book! It illustrates the 4 stages of Purpose beautifully, like a map to follow for those of us willing to take such a journey. The intriguing surprise about the farmer towards the end of the book illustrates how an unbending faith shows us the power of what is truly possible. Thank you to Jon for the reminder that the obstacles in the growth phase are normal and to never give up! Read this book...it will improve your perspectives, encourage you to consider and pursue your purpose, remind you to trust and surrender and promise you that you have everything you need to make a difference!

A charming little nutshell on purpose

I'm always up for reading a book on one's purpose in life. What spiritual reader isn't? The problem is the topic has been overdone and the market flooded with such books. Purpose-inspired titles that I've read include: The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose by Eckhart Tolle and who can forget The Secret by Rhonda Byrne? But I'm left to wonder how the latest book on the topic can add anything new?

The Seed: Finding Purpose and Happiness in Life and Work by Jon Gordon was just published this year. This little nutshell of a book--a mere 143 pages--reminded me of Henry David Thoreau's book Faith in a Seed, where he writes, "I have great faith in a seed. Convince me you have a seed there and I am prepared to expect wonders." Though Gordon is not a philosopher or Transcendentalist like Thoreau, rather an author of bestselling business self-help books, he may have found an original twist on this old, well known adage: the be happy in work or in life, you must know your purpose and be aligned with it.

Gordon's book follows the story of Josh, a midlevel employee of a respected company who finds he has lost his passion for work. Josh's boss is aware of his burnout, confronts him, and offers him time off to decide whether his job is worth keeping. So off Josh goes to find his purpose. On his journey, he meets several people who guide him along the way, introducing him to the concept of the seed.

There are four stages of the seed: first preparation, second planting, third growth, and finally the forth stage, the harvest. In the preparation stage, Josh learns that anything one has ever done, all of one's gifts, talents, lessons learned, lead up to finding one's purpose. Josh meets a farmer at this stage who tells him that one can't find purpose without adversity and challenges. "Adversity, for many, features a time of drought. Drought might include a time when ideas, money, good fortune, contacts, and success dry up. It might include a job loss or the death of a loved one or a personal illness...During such times, you feel like you are in a desert, isolated from the prosperity, health and success of the world...However when you progress to the other stages of purpose and look back at the preparation stage of your life, you'll realize it was the drought that made you the person you are today."

In the planting stage, Josh learns not to go looking around for his purpose, but to plant himself where he is, and give his all in service to others. In turn, his purpose will find him. I found this to be a novel and refreshing concept. Usually, the hero journeys out, sometimes to far away lands, as in Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love. Staying put is almost counterintuitive, yet appealing. Following planting is the growth phase where most give up, as it has the greatest resistance. Josh is warned that right before one reaps his or her harvest, one faces the greatest challenges. The closer one gets to his or her goal, the stronger the resistance.

At the end of his journey, Josh makes it through all four stages, and finds his own purpose. He discovers the might of passion and purpose, and seeks to teach others. One of the most touching parts at the end is when Josh shares the story of a loan officer of a mortgage company who told him that her job was to save people's marriages, because in helping people keep their homes she would be helping to keep families together.

In the end, I found The Seed to be a charming little green book, worth the read for its innovative take on an age-old adage. However, be warned that the writing is simplistic, written for the level of an elementary school student, and ridden with cliché expressions. In my experience, sometimes these kinds of books are not the best written and oversimplified. Still, the concepts of The Seed and its ideas are well organized, well thought out, and stirring enough for a satisfying and thought provoking read.

Self mummified monks

This was a set of short stories that were like reading cliff notes into the past of four monks from different walks of life and different times. I was hoping that there would be more historical information than what was delivered. I would say this, however, when I travel to Japan, I would use this information to go to the temples to view for myself.
If you're looking for more than this wouldn't be the avenue for you.

Through cases, an articulated process, and a theory of literacy education and social change, Morrell extends the conversation among literacy educators about what constitutes critical literacy while also examining implications for practice in secondary and postsecondary American educational contexts. This book is distinguished by its weaving together of theory and practice.

Morrell begins by arguing for a broader definition of the "critical" in critical literacy – one that encapsulates the entire Western philosophical tradition as well as several important "Othered" traditions ranging from postcolonialism to the African-American tradition. Next, he looks at four cases of critical literacy pedagogy with urban youth: teaching popular culture in a high school English classroom; conducting community-based critical research; engaging in cyber-activism; and doing critical media literacy education. Lastly, he returns to theory, first considering two areas of critical literacy pedagogy that are still relatively unexplored: the importance of critical reading and writing in constituting and reconstituting the self, and critical writing that is not just about coming to a critical understanding of the world but that plays an explicit and self-referential role in changing the world. Morrell concludes by outlining a grounded theory of critical literacy pedagogy and considering its implications for literacy research, teacher education, classroom practice, and advocacy work for social change.

Very dense, but full of info

I read this book as part of a course, and I struggled through most of it because of the language. I think the approach is a valid one, and it is something I hope to use in my future classroom. But do not expect to read this leisurely on a Sunday afternoon, this is definitely a dense critical text that requires your full attention to comprehend. I commend the author on sharing his experience in the classroom.

It is my first time to learn the concept of Entertainment Education. Through reading this book, it offers the great details on the purpose of studying how the entertainment might shape our lives. As the viewers, we don't normally think education could be part of the entertainment. However, Dr. Brown used his own examples and his travel journey experiences to teach the readers how media could make the differences in the life of yours and others. About the Author
Born in 1879, Freeman Wills Crofts was an Irish engineer and one of the preeminent writers of Golden Age detective fiction. Educated in Belfast, he was apprenticed at eighteen to his uncle, who was chief engineer of the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway. Marrying in 1912, he was to hold various positions in railway engineering before becoming Chief Assistant Engineer, and it was during an illness-induced absence from work that he wrote his first novel, The Cask (1920), which became an international success. Considered a classic of the detective genre, it was followed by a steady production of more than thirty novels, most of which featured the meticulous Inspector French of Scotland Yard. An influential and key pioneer of the genre, Crofts became an early member of the legendary Detection Club in London along with Agatha Christie, Anthony Berkeley and other established mystery writers. He also wrote numerous plays for the BBC, dozens of short stories, a number of true crime works, and a religious book. Known for tight plots and scrupulous attention to detail, his work set new standards in detective fiction plotting. In 1939, the author was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. In retirement from engineering he continued to write and pursued music, carpentry, gardening and travel. He died in 1957.

The novel opens in the old house of Starvel on a gloomy September afternoon in a remote part of Yorkshire. By Page 17 the house is burnt down, and by Page 20 the charred remains of its three inmates are discovered.
An atmosphere of gloom and dreariness is maintained throughout this novel. The house fire is found to be the result of arson, the inmates to have been murdered, and a vast amount of money to have been stolen. By Page 46 Detective Inspector French takes over the case, and we follow his investigations thereafter.
Renowned for his narrative and plot construction skills, even by 1927 when this his seventh mystery novel appeared, Crofts uses the resources of melodrama here rather than drawing on his expertise in engineering which he was later to utilize so brilliantly. We are given, however one glimpse of a 1920s railway train. "The huge engine with its high-pitched boiler and stumpy funnel rolled slowly past, followed by coach after coach, brightly lighted, luxurious, gliding smoothly by." More often encountered are dastardly murders, deadly rivalries, exhumations, and villains in disguise. Typical 1920s detection procedures are employed. Useful identifications are obtained from taxi drivers, and from bank tellers who record the numbers of bank notes of large denominations. Slowly but surely French has his man cornered and is ready to call "Check Mate" when something totally unexpected happens.
Readers who enjoy sampling mysteries from the "Golden Age of Detective Fiction" should not overlook this one. As usual Crofts' plain but fluent story telling makes for easy reading. Each sentence dovetails perfectly into its neighbors, as is the way in good storytelling.

High Quality "Humdrum" Mystery

Freeman Wills Croft was once quite a big name in mystery fiction, although nowadays he's probably only known to hardcore buffs. Some of these buffs have recently classified him as a "humdrum" writer -- I'm not one hundred percent sure what all is meant by the term, but I take it that it means, at least in part, a quiet concentration on the "humdrum" facts of detection.

That surely describes Croft,who would probably be classified in the "police procedural" bin nowadays. Its a mystery, with a puzzling crime, clues, an investigator and a surprising ending, but the focus is on procedure and the careful step by step process of Inspector French, Croft's detective.

This story is carefully written but it's pleasant in its carefulness, if that makes any sense. This is a very craftsmanlike sort of book and there's a real pleasure in that, it's very readable. French doesn't really have an inner life or psychology (outside of some modest ambition now and then), but we end up liking him anyway, maybe simply because Croft keeps the viewpoint fairly tight on French for most of the book. The case is clever and has a couple of great reverses, just when you think you have it all figured out. It flags a little when Croft tries to get actual people in it (a love story) or actual emotion (an ill-advised "thriller" portion), but mostly I can recommend this to fans of golden age mysteries.

Classic Crofts

One of Crofts's most highly praised works, which lives up to its reputation with ease. A miser and his servants are burnt to death in Yorkshire; despite the verdict of accident, murder is suggested by the fact that the bank notes, which should have perished in the fire, are still in circulation. French, disguised as an insurance investigator, travels north, and from there to France and Scotland. Despite a great deal of travelling, his plodding detection is genuinely interesting, and, although he only solves the crime a minute before he arrests the murderer, he comes across as more of a thinker than in later tales. The red herrings to which he applies his mind are as fresh as the writing and characterisation; and, although the reader will not be unduly surprised by the final revelation, he will marvel at the intricacy of a highly ingenious plot, with a nice bit of body-snatching for extra merit.

The Pooh Perplex

I first read The Pooh Perplex in the summer before my freshman year of college; my father presented it to me as an encapsulation of the reasons why he had abandoned his English major. I had not yet encountered Leavis, Crane, and the other critics so marvelously parodied in Crews's book, but I spent a good few hours shrieking with laughter at Myron Masterson's vision of Kanga as castrating "'Mom' figure" and Simon Lacerous's characterization of the bear himself as a flabby old Tory with a string of knightly titles and an overfondness for condensed milk.

Then I came to college and took a Literary Criticism and Theory class; with wonder, I recognized in my casebook more and more of the bizarre characters inhabiting Crews's topsy-turvy hermeneutic milieu. Oddest of all, I found that my reading of The Pooh Perplex had actually provided me with a fairly solid overview of structuralism, Marxist theory, and other critical concoctions my professor obliged me to imbibe. And when I gave Crews's work a second reading, I discovered a myriad of hilarities that had previously passed me by.

Though it is depressing that Crews's zany satire can help a student of literature grasp the principal critical theories of the past fifty years, I disagree with my father's justification for forsaking his major. Many critics unintentionally self-parody; to endure their bombast, the reader must absorb the good, dismiss the inane, and find in the ludicrous a scrap or two of humor. Fortunately, we have Crews to assist us with that last task. Satire is a dying art; read The Pooh Perplex to understand why it is still necessary.

Brilliant and funny

It was probably the publication of Postmodern Pooh, Frederick Crews's second venture into Pooh studies, that explains the renewed availability of The Pooh Perplex more than 40 years after its first appearance. But whatever the reason, it is an excellent thing that modern readers can get hold of it, both because it is a brilliant and witty book in itself and also because it makes a natural companion for Postmodern Pooh.

For those who have not met the book before it should be explained that it is a series of parodies of different styles of literary criticism (those that were fashionable in the 1960s) applied to Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner, collected together as a "case book" of the kind that was then popular for elementary English courses, and accompanied by Questions and Study Projects prepared by the editor, ostensibly Crews himself, but in reality as much of a parody as the articles themselves.

No doubt one would need to be familiar already with the parodied styles to get the most from the book, but no matter; one can get a great deal of amusement from it without any specialist knowledge, and some of the sources are fairly obvious even to non-specialists, the Freudian analysis by "Karl Anschauung", for example, or the proletarian analysis by "Martin Tempralis". On the other hand, readers born since the book was written may not easily recognize F. R. Leavis thinly disguised as "Simon Lacerous".

The non-specialist reader will easily be tempted to believe that Crews is exaggerating. Surely no serious expert on English literature could really express some of the sillier ideas expressed in this book? Alas, he amply demonstrates with real quotations from real (and apparently serious) publications that they could and they did.

Keep You In Confusion

Frederick Crews made his name back in 1963 with this punchy, sardonic parody of academic self-importance. Over 45 years later, it retains its power to cut to the quick. Though not laugh-out-loud hilarious, it has a wit that exposes truth to the light of day. Though it goes on a bit longer than is actually necessary to prove its point, it remains a reminder to those of us who work with words and ideas of why we need to be humble.

In his facetious introduction, Crews tells eager freshman that this book "is frankly designed to keep you in confusion." Since too many freshman texts to exactly that, this take is all too just. The satirical articles then go on to deflate the most pompous mid-century literary critics, including Lacan, Bloom, and Eliot. Some of the references may be dated, but even if we don't recognize all of Crews' individual targets, we know the type.

The paradoxical aspect is that this book could almost be used to teach how to do criticism correctly. By mocking what the various schools do wrong to make themselves ridiculous, Crews also shows how they can be made communicative and useful. That being the case, every English major should have a copy of this book thrust into their hands. Literate and dense, but readable and funny, this is a must for all of us working in the humanities.

Longer than it needs to be but the simple GOLDEN advice is:
Do your demo BACKWARDS, kinda like a cooking show.

E.g., I make speech therapy software.
So I'd :

1. Show the software in action (ideally with a video of a stroke survivor using it)
2. Show maybe an easy, medium and hard exercises.
3. THEN show them how they can choose different lessons and different difficulty levels.

So... you show the PAYOFF first, then the "how to" aftwards.

Good book, but too long and too cute

Despite stating his preference for substance over style (p. 169) Mr. Cohan lets his style overwhelm the content of his book. Great Demo! contains excellent advice and is very practical in their presentation, particularly for people who are starting in a field role and need a basic road map for their customer encounters.

As far as style, Mr. Cohan's tendency to tell long stories from his experiences in the field ("...I set up my computer, connected to a network connection, and adjusted the LCD projector" p. 146) makes this book too long. Additionally, The Author's tendency to capitalize! Random Nouns and obsessive use of Exclamation Marks! disrupt the flow of reading. Lastly, for a writer that claims that "Humans are visual creatures" (p. 86) the lack of any illustration or charts, except sample customer org charts, is curious. I can think of a graphic model showing the author's proposed methodology and the progress made through it, allowing the reader to visualize their own progress.

This is an amazing manual, far more than what I had hoped. It covers compressed air systems from the end use all the way back to the compressor room. This book is a "must have" if you are serious about understanding your compressed air system and how to improve not only energy efficiency, but reliability, air quality, and lifespan.
