Grade 6 Up?To most modern kids, classics may be great, worthy, even exciting stories, but they were written in and for their own times and the context can sometimes be obscure. Using the visually irresistible printing techniques popularized by the "Eyewitness" series, these two books, when prominently displayed, will probably attract more impulse readers than some of the dustier editions. But do they accomplish their stated aim? Direct textual illustration is plentiful, lively, and useful. The reproductions of prints, photographs, and maps that pepper each page and are intended to enhance readers' grasp of the times, however, are a mixed success. There is a sameness to them and an arbitrary feel to their use. Pirate buffs will find Treasure Island's variety of ship drawings, details of sailing minutiae, and photographs of pieces of eight or guns and swords quite satisfying. Verne's work is less enhanced by its graphics. This episodic travelogue would be best served by lots of clear maps with the route well marked. But the few maps shown are so small that the legends are unreadable and country and city names are blurred. The explanatory captions (credited to Jean-Pierre Verdet only on the copyright page) accompanying the latter are largely superfluous, although they do add random snippets of historical background to the journey. It's the views of old ships and trains, of costumed natives, and distant ports of call--from Port Said to San Francisco--that evoke the tale's panorama of the exotic, just as the many lurid Verne trading cards and other spinoffs capture the plot's melodramatic highlights. steam powered excellence

I can't believe that a 130+ year old book translated to English was good enough to keep me up half the night but this brilliant old gem did. The story features the height of late 1800 steam technology and a couple of heros who want to circumnavigate the earth in 80 days to win a bet. The characters are surprisingly likable and the action is just GREAT. Put this at the top of the queue for great free reads and you will get a wonderful easy read and a brilliant view of the world.

Very Good Even If No Balloon Rides

The story is about an eccentric Englishman named Phileas Fogg who makes a twenty thousand pound bet with five of his rich country club friends to travel around the world in eighty days with his trusty servant Passepartout a Frenchman. Along the way they have to overcome many obstacles. Fogg spends most of his fortune overcoming these obstacles and if they don't win the bet he will be ruined. There are some things however that even money can't overcome and several times Fogg is faced with a moral decision that if he pursues the right thing to do will significantly set him back on time.
Their travels take them through England, Paris, the Suez Canal, Egypt, India, Hong Kong, Japan, America, and Ireland. In India they rescue a princess who stays on with them throughout the rest of their journey and a love interest grows between her and Fogg. There is also another subplot involving a bank robbery in England where 55 thousand pounds have been stolen, and Fogg is considered to be the main suspect. A detective Fix is assigned to follow Fogg and to arrest him once he sets foot on English territory.
This book seems to be split into two parts. During the first part of the book when things are going smoothly the servant Passepartout seems to be the main character. At each port Fogg stays in his cabin and just focuses on the next leg of the trip while Passepartout ventures out and gives you a description of the land. It would seem a shame to travel all around the world and not pause to take in any of the sights as Fogg does. I found most of these early chapters pretty mundane and uneventful.
The subplot with Fix at times becomes annoying, and it isn't until they are all working towards the same goal, that this line of the story improves. I also found the exchange rate between dollars and pounds confusing at times. The pound must have been about four or five times greater than the dollar at the time this story was written. Fogg leaves England with around twenty thousand pounds and spends it seems over a hundred thousand dollars on the trip.
Later on as the story progresses and things start to go wrong the focus changes over to Fogg. Passepartout still does some heroic things, but Fogg takes charge and shows some redeeming qualities. The pace of the story quickens and becomes more enjoyable with a few skirmishes taking place in India and America. Fogg seems a different person upon returning to England, and his life is changed forever.
My wife has a framed poster that hangs on one of our walls with a collage of all of the movies that have won the best picture of the year award. "Around The World In Eighty Days" won the award in 1956, and the picture is represented in the collage with the main character Phileas Fogg and his trusty servant Passepartout taking a balloon flight. Based on this picture for years I always assumed the book was about a trip in a balloon around the world. I was surprised then to find out once I finally got a chance to read the actual book that they travel by boat, train, car, sled, and even elephant, but that they never travel by balloon. It turns out that the most memorable scene from the movie was made up by the director and added on to the story. The director seemed to have come to same conclusion that I did, that the written story itself was very good, but I was expecting something a little more.
The book was written in 1873. Jules Verne the author is a Frenchman. In this day and age it was pleasing to see both England and America looked upon in such a favorable light. Englishmen were portrayed as noble and Americans were portrayed as wild and adventurous.

I think this book is a superior book because it is full of action. This book is about a man named Mr. Phileas Fogg, and his faithful servant, Passepartout, that wager a bet that They can travel the whole world in eighty days stopping at Suez via Mont Cenis and Brindisi, then to Bombay, then Calcutta, Hong Kong, Japan (Yokohama), San Francisco, New York, back to London, all within eighty days, and by steamboats, and trains. However, a nosy detective, Detective Fix, tracks them down, and tries to arrest Mr. Fogg because he believes that Fogg stole fifty-five thousand pounds. As one may guess, this greatly detains Mr. Fogg, and it seems like he may not make the trip around the world after all. However, the Fix never seems to catch up with Fogg, and Fogg triumphs over most of the obstacles that come his way, like missing boats, missing trains, missing people, and Fogg even meets and rescues a beautiful Indian Princess called Aouda. However, Fix finally catches up to the detective, and everything seems lost for Fogg until Fix discovers that Fogg was not the robber, and Fogg is released. Even so, Fogg is one day late, and in doing so, misses the train that would have taken him to London precisely to win the bet. He ordered a special train, but even in doing so, still misses the bet...or so he thinks. The ending of the book is a very unexpected one. Read this book and find out!

colors were too intense and looked like they had been badly photoshopped

The only decent photograph is the one on the cover. The other photos were not in focus, colors were too intense and looked like they had been badly photoshopped, and photos were taken from weird angles (like they had been taken at the height of a child rather than from a more appropriate perspective). In addition, who writes the entire text in 4-point type? I am rarely disappointed in Rizzoli publications, but this one was a major letdown. I am sending it back.

Houses you'll never visit, people you'll never meet --- come on in!

When we tell our family stories, most of us can’t go back more than three or four generations before we’re talking about an ancestor who crossed an ocean. Not so the owners of England’s legendary “piles.” Just consider the cover of “Great Houses Modern Aristocrats” — the young couple on the cover are Nicholas and Dinah Ashley-Cooper (and son Anthony), the 12th Earl and Countess of Shaftesbury, seated in the library of St. Giles House in Dorset, under a portrait of the first Earl.

Here’s James Reginato on the timelines of some of the houses he profiles in this book:

"Most of these houses have belonged to the same families for centuries. Take Haddon Hall, for example: By 1200 the Vernons had settled into this crenellated stone manor house in Derbyshire. Almost 400 years later, in 1565, they married into the Manners family. Fast-forward another 400-plus years, and Haddon Hall remains in that family’s steady hands. Broughton Castle, a moated romantic redoubt in Oxfordshire, was last on the real estate market in 1377, some 75 years after it was built, when Sir John de Broughton snapped it up. “We’ve been hanging on ever since,” his descendant, the Honourable Martin Fiennes, told me jocularly…..From Blenheim to Haddon Hall, one thing is clear: A family’s attachment to its great house is visceral and time-tried."

This commitment requires dedication — and funding — that is beyond mortal man (and most of the 1%). Blenheim Palace, for example: “seven acres under one roof, eclipsing the splendor of any of the British royal family’s residences.” Getting access to these mostly ultra-private residences is one thing. Taking pictures that suggest detail as well as mass is another. Happily, Jonathan Becker’s photographs are of the highest order — they chronicle more than “great rooms” that really are great.

But what kept me going through house after house —there are 16 — are the stories of the owners. From the chapter about Nicholas Ashley-Cooper:

"St. Giles House, a gargantuan and grandiose brick pile, has been Nicholas Ashley-Cooper’s family’s home since 1650. By the time he was born, however, it was like a haunted mansion. Uninhabited since the early 60s—when the Ashley-Coopers decamped to Mainsail Haul, the eight-bedroom dower house on the 5,700-acre estate—St. Giles House had fallen into a parlous state of decay, with rain and snow seeping in when the huge metal sheets that sealed it flapped in the wind.

As he grew up, Nicholas comprehended with some relief that, since he was the second son, the decaying manor wasn’t his problem. His brother Anthony, two years older, would inherit the dilapidated estate along with the family titles on the death of their father, Anthony, the 10th Earl of Shaftesbury.

Nick, as he is generally known, decided he needed to get away if he was going to make anything of his life. In the spring of 2002 he moved to New York’s East Village, where he began to thrive as a techno disc jockey going by the handle Nick AC.

Then, in November 2004, a series of tragic, hard-to-believe events changed everything.

His father went missing in the Côte d’Azur, where he had been living for the previous two years; his body, mauled by animals, with just shreds of his jeans, was discovered five months later at the bottom of a remote ravine outside Cannes. The 66-year-old earl had been strangled at the behest of a high-end prostitute of Tunisian-Moroccan descent whom he had married two years previously and made the Countess of Shaftesbury.

Six months later, on May 15, 2005, it got worse: Anthony, 27 years old, suffered a heart attack and died. Suddenly, Nick was the 12th Earl of Shaftesbury, and he had a huge wreck of a house on his hands."

Splashed with bold color designs and action photographs of people―like a woman with outstretched arms in a field of bright yellow flowers―Conger’s exuberant pep talk feels like a warm and fuzzy motivational poster. Many of the colorful pictures include inspirational quotes, such as these attributed to Estée Lauder: “I never dreamed about success. I worked for it.” Indeed, hard work and grit are the cornerstones of Conger’s message, one often tinged with humor. A photo of a pretty young woman asleep in bed is accompanied by the message, “GET THE F*@% OUT OF BED.” Conger also jokingly compares the Broadway musical Annie to her own “hard knock life.” When Conger was 3, her mother died, and she had a turbulent adolescence. But she didn’t let hardship stop her from reaching her goals. This slim, easy-to-flip volume offers familiar concepts for self-improvement, such as becoming a more loving person (the author suggests smiling at cashiers) and learning gratitude. Conger’s upbeat kaleidoscope of advice isn’t a step-by-step guide, but it does have some usable ideas. About the Author

Some say she was raised by wolves, others claim truckers. No matter what her upbringing, this super woman has flourished in a male dominated industry for 21 years. Beginning in the wild, wild West of Las Vegas in 1993 with KB Homes (a top five national homebuilder), Ronda Conger has staked her claim as the Vice President of Idaho’s largest homebuilder, CBH Homes, where she leads the CBH troops daily, overseeing all areas of the company for the past twelve years.

Her resume doesn’t stop there. As owner of a real estate company and a mining company, a board member of the St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital and Zions Bank Women’s Financial Group, and a cabinet member for the Treasure Valley YMCA, she happily serves as an active member of the Boise business community.

Business woman, professional speaker, and now author of two books: Better Human and Better Thinking, it’s been rumored her high energy and passion come from shot gunning red bulls daily, but she’ll tell you it comes from her incredibly hot husband, Jim Conger (just ask her) and her 13- and 17-year-old sons.

She thanks the heavens each day for this incredible journey and is so very grateful for the opportunity to serve and love all those that she comes in contact with.

A unique approach to personal growth and success.

Better Human is one of those rare books that is both entertaining and informative. The author, Ronda Conger, is a builder, public speaker and head of an organization that promotes her ideas (www.betterhuman.today. She begins the book with some facts about herself, including that her mother died when she was three years old and that after graduating from high school she went to Canada to begin a working career. The book is divided into 13 chapters each of which essentially supports the idea that positive thinking is the key to a successful life. There are chapters on such topics as the importance of love, gratitude, the value of hard work, the importance of surrounding yourself with positive thinking friends and being in a positive environment, and similar upbeat themes. The book is written in an informal style with lots of colorful inserts. I found it easy to read and finished within one hour. Of course the value of the book is to apply the information to your life. There are a number of books and websites you can access for this purpose and small tests your can take. There also are some catchy expressions such as, “Be a pilot, not a passenger,” and “Life is like an elevator, sometimes you have to stop to let some people off.” I do take issue with one of her conclusions, namely that the best NBA teams are those in which the players touch each other the most. She cites the Los Angeles Lakers, who have been one of the worst teams in the league for the past three years and Kevin Garnett, widely regarded as one of the most disliked players in the league, as her examples.

I rate the book at four stars and not five because Ms. Conger is essentially going over the same ground as other positive attitude books and her approach is too over the top for me to take seriously. At the same time I do think people can benefit from the advice given in this book and I recommend buying it, reading it and applying it to your life.

This book is so inspirational and motivating...it's great hearing the story of someone who started at the bottom and had to work her way up! So many of us share these same types of growing pains, but it takes a lot to overcome them and make the most out of the hard times. Great job, Ronda! I reccomend this book to anyone who needs a little kick in the ass to make themselves a better human, with a better life.

This is an amazing book. I was hooked from start to finish. Each chapter transitioned smoothly! This is the first book I literally couldn't put down. I finished it in one sitting! Twelve-step recovery is not just for goys. Taub, a rabbi in the Chabad-Lubavitch movement and cofounder of a Jewish recovery community in Milwaukee, brings a lens of Jewish spirituality to the 12 steps and finds them not only kosher but also helpful in deepening Jewish spiritual life. Citing Carl Jung, he first analyzes addiction as a spiritual problem of longing for God but substituting alcohol (spirits) for spiritual relationship. From there he goes on to trace and emphasize the God consciousness that the 12 steps advocate, and he then offers a careful theological analysis that finds much consistency between recovery and Jewish teachings about God, prayer, forgiveness, and relationships. The œGod of our understanding that recovery talks about is also the œGod of our fathers, he argues. A glossary of rabbinic sources buttresses his own gloss on the 12 steps. This is a thoughtful counter to one criticism occasionally heard—that the 12 steps are implicitly Christian—and a singular and valuable resource for those in need. (Feb.)

Every now and again I run across a book that just grabs me. Rabbi Taub has written such a book. His understanding of the disease of addiction is refreshing. Instead of focusing on the pathology that causes addiction, he understands our problem from a unique perspective -- that addiction happens because of what is right about us.

It is obvious that this book is written by a man who has integrated his understanding of spirituality into his personal experience with recovery. Rabbi Shais Taub and his wife, Brocha, were founding co-directors of the Jewish recovery community in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

He currently resides with his wife and children in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and operates Congregation Conscious Contact, a Jewish prayer and meditation group for the enhancement of Twelve-Step recovery.

A Unique and Long Overdue Work That Will Save Lives....

The recommendation from Rabbi and Dr. Abraham Twerski at the twilight of his career alone should be enough to read the book. The book stands on its own merit and to date is the most illuminating work by a Rabbi about the 12 steps and their place in Jewish tradition. Rabbi Taub debunks numerous myths in the Jewish community regarding the 12 steps that have often resulted in devastated families and even deaths due to addiction. Like all good Rabbis, R. Taub writes with the legendary Jewish humor and an erudite respect for the study of Torah by citing sources like the Talmud, Ethics of our Fathers, and the Kuzari. If this book saves even one life then it was worth the effort. It will likely save many lives.

A Must Read

While the title of Rabbi Shais Taub's book rightly suggests that this is a work aimed at Jews in recovery from addiction, the true success of Taub's endeavor is that the book will provide insight and a fresh perspective to anyone in recovery, regardless of religious affiliation. The book exhibits a depth of understanding, both of the disease of addiction, and of the spiritual process of recovery, that transcends religion. Addiction, after all, is a human affliction, not a Jewish one. And recovery from addiction is a spiritual process, not a Jewish process.

And yet, this is clearly a "Jewish" book. The writing, at once conversational and learned, entices the reader with anecdotes, touches on the history of the various 12-step recovery programs, draws parallels from scripture, and provides coherent and inspired guidance on matters both spiritual and religious. Taub is adept at revealing the congruence of the 12-step recovery process, Jewish theology, and Jewish tradition. He convincingly demonstrates, in example after example, that there exists no conflict between Judaism and the 12-step recovery philosophy. Rather, Taub celebrates the fact that the God mentioned throughout the 12-step programs' literature can be the God of Israel.

Taub's book is necessary reading for the Jew in recovery, and is highly recommended for anyone in recovery.

If you are Jewish, this is the only book of its kind for you

Being a Member of the Tribe and in the program, this is the first book that I can honestly identify with and had several A-HA moments when studying the material. Hashem is the G-d of my understanding, and this book was written for me. I grew up in an Orthodox (Yiddish was spoken) home, and most of the things my Dad told me about alcohol addiction were reitinerated in the book. Thank you Reb Taub for your thoughtful insight.
