Good start, annoying ending

I want to start off by saying i never write reviews but i feel like I had to express my thoughts on this book. Ok, the book started off funny and interesting. Scarlett seemed like a strong heroine and Zeke seemed like a sexy alpha male, traits I like the two main protagonists to have. However, once it got to the middle and the end, it just started to drag and irritate the crap out of me. The characters were not acting their age and the conflict between them just kept repeating itself. Zeke and especially Scarlett who are supposed to be 24 years old acted like they were 18. Scarlett was so insecure and it was annoying to the point where i hoped that she wouldn't get her HEA. Also, the way Zeke talked really bothered me. He was fine in the beginning but toward the middle/end it was like a whole different person. He was still caring and sweet but he'd switch to being aggressive in a flash. It was disconcerting. And the way he wouldn't use "I" to start a sentence really bothered me. He just started omitting it out of the blue (for example: "Just got you back." "Don't know what else to do." "That what you really think?"). All in all the book was pretty predictable and had some pretty hot sex scenes but the way the characters started acting toward the middle/end just really brought the book down. It almost seemed like a different author stepped in to finish the book.

4.5 stars for Book 2 in the Powers That Be series can be read as a stand alone but if you are anything at all like me you will turn around and purchase book 1 - Gable (and you should hurry up because it's only $0.99) to read more about these four enigmatic brothers. Ezekiel (Zeke) Powers is a senior at Hallervan college majoring in finance but his immediate future is football and he is slated to "go pro" in April after blowing all the scouts and coaches away at the combine. Zeke is a gorgeous, generous, and slightly dominant male model of perfection. The man could not be a better son / brother / friend / lover and that is what seems to be Scarlett O'Rourke's problem because she feels he is too good to be true.
Scarlett lives by a strict set of rules that have basically put her social life on hold and has a two year run of self imposed abstinence going causing her to shut down any advances by men. This poor girl has had it rough not only while growing up but then she is forced to take time off school to help her dad out when her mom decided to bail on her and her little brother. Scarlett has dated but the few jerks she went out with were cheaters. Working two jobs, going to school and being a substitute parent to her little brother while her dad works as a long distance truck driver leaves Scarlett barely any time for herself so when the beautiful man is once again in the diner where she works, sitting in her section, and ordering breakfast she shuts him down when he asks her out but this time Scar is a bit morose cause good lord the man is hot!!! Zeke doesn't take no for an answer and actively pursues Scarlett doing one nice thing after another to prove he is worth the chance. I absolutely loved this story of learning to love and trust after being dealt a crap hand. Can not wait to read about the other Powers brothers in this sweet and sexy series :)

Loved it!

Something drew me to Scarlett. She's had some pretty crappy boyfriends, been cheated on more than once. Of course she's not going to be trusting. The man that wants her heart is going to have to prove he deserves it. I liked her determination. She's given up on men, choosing to stay focused on her life goal. That is until Zeke came into her life.

Lucky for Scarlett, Zeke perfectly balances his determination to get Scarlett, without going too far and scaring her away. He was very patient and understanding once he knew her past. He also supported her life goals, like a good partner should.

My only complaint of this book is that it seemed to end to abruptly for me. I feel like I needed more time to feel like Scarlett had proven that she was over her fear of being cheated on and that they would get their HEA. I also wanted to know more about Zeke's future and where Scarlett fits into all of it. Hopefully we will see more of this amazing couple in the next books in the series.

I can't wait to read more about these amazing Power's brothers.

Passed the exam today. Bear in mind that I've already passed the A+ exams about 3 years ago.

The book was a nice refresher on material I know; but I also learned some things, too. It's definitely a "Pre-A+" exam.
The one downside, other than a couple grammar error in Chapters 1 & 2, is the downside that most (if not all) Sybex textbooks have: black and white pictures. This downside is partially preference (I prefer color pictures... because I can see in color), but it can also hinder the learning experience. For example, in the book there is a picture of a black keyboard. This picture is referenced in the reading material, saying (paraphrased), "You can also see the Start button..." Now, unless you had a real keyboard in front of you as a reference, or you know the general location of commonly used buttons, you wouldn't be able to follow the material because the picture it's referencing is... not clear.

But anyway, even if this is the first IT exam you've ever studied for, this book is sufficient. Read it, study the review questions, take advantage of the online assessment tests. When you take the test, don't let the time limit stress you out. Read each question carefully and answer to the best of your ability. It can be done.

way to much details for the exam

My background is not in IT and I am PMP certified. I decided that I want to break into the IT world and IT project management and needed a place to start. I decided to take the CompTIA IT fundamentals and move up the ladder with other certifications. I bought this book and registered for the exam. I just took the exam and passed it. Here is my take on it. If you are using this book to pass the exam , you WILL no doubt pass it. However, wayyyyyyyyy to much details for the exam. I thought the exam would be more difficult and would test your knowledge on a little bit of more advanced stuff other than what the touchpad on the laptop does, and how to hook up a computer to an electric plug ( seriously). I was prepared for the exam to be more difficult. This book is excellent for your personal knowledge and advancement, however if you are using it simple for the exam it was too much details and information. Here are my tips for preparing for the exam. Read this book once, make sure you reference it with the exam objectives and know the exam objectives very well without going into to much details .

May December romance set in Texas with a southern heroine and ex-forces hero

I wanted to read this because it is the first in the Texas Cattleman's Club series. Hank is a mature man at 39 an the approach of his 40th birthday is making him antsy about settling down. He has two woman in mind but can't decide between them. Mature women in their thirties who know the score.

When Callie turns up as his relieving secretary, he is bowled over by this very young yet straight talking young woman. But she is 22 years old. Far too young even if she wasn't the beloved grand-niece of the woman who practically brought him up.

Of course they are thrown together and when they have to travel to her home propinquity plays a part. I quite enjoyed this take on the May-December story line which I love. Hank was hot but a little naive about women. Callie was very interesting. This is the second Dixie Browning book I've read and I find her southern women a little different to what I'm used to. Callie is not highly educated but she is hard working and a natural nurturer.

Altogether an enjoyable read and I will follow up on the rest of the series as I come across them. Fortunately they are being released as eBooks.

Endearing characters. Sassy, engaging storyline

Note: Stand alone read. 1st book in the Texas Cattleman's Club series of 37 books.

GOOD, EASY READ. Well written, strong characters, heartfelt situations, sassy dialogue, great secondary cast, and a few surprise twists. HOWEVER, the writing is a little fragmented, the covert op is a bit of a distraction and weakens the mismatched characters storyline, the romance is rushed, and the shortened format doesn't showcase D. Browning's writing talents.

THE STORY revolves around Texas business executive nearing 40, Hank Langley, who decides he needs to marry and produce an heir, or two. He narrows the field to two sophisticated beauties, one humorless, conniving, and doesn't like kids, and the other dumb, giggling, but professes to love them. Both are deemed unsuitable by Manie, the woman who raised him. So she makes plans of her own. As his administrative assistant, Manie brings in her 22-year-old, smart, straight forward, unsophisticated niece, Callie Riley, to work for Hank while she takes time off for some minor surgery. The ploy works of course, as both Hank and Callie realize they want to spend the next 50 years trying to figure each other out.

OVERALL, enjoyable story about two hard-headed individuals who fall in love despite their differences. Too short for a compelling read, but it is just fun watching Hank get all tied up in knots trying to deal with a woman who is "not his type."

You may enjoy the complex characters and storytelling of N. Bruhns, A. Stuart, E. Palfrey, Dixie Browning, and R. C. Ryan. For sweet, funny, heart touching romances with great dialogue and descriptive imagery, try Susan Fox, Cara Colter, and Christyne Butler.

One of Dixie Browning's most enjoyable books!

The warmth of these characters drew me in from the start. I loved both the hero and heroine, and adored the secondary character, Miss Manie. I especially liked the heroine who was smart and sassy and very honest. Good book to relax with for an evening.

About the Author

Richard D. Bardgett is Editor of Journal of Ecology and is recognised as an ISI Highly Cited Researcher. He was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 2006. He serves on the Editorial Boards of Ecology Letters and Ecosystems and is a member of Rothamsted's Board of Directors.

David A. Wardle received the NZ Association of Scientists Medal in 1999, the NZ Ecological Society Research Award in 2001, and has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of NZ since 2003 and an ISI Highly Cited Researcher since 2006. He also serves or has served on a range of Editorial Boards including Science, Ecology and Ecology Letters.

Great book for plant and soil ecologists

I'm teaching an upper division soil ecology course this coming fall, and we are going to read selected chapters from this book. It's going to be a bit advanced for this group, but it will be so worth it. Richard Bardgett is a god in this field and the book reflects his years of accumulated wisdom and insight. Beautifully written, great figures -- every time I pick it up I get reinspired!! Highly, highly recommend this book for a range of types -- master gardeners, grad students in ecology, scientists looking for a good introduction to soil processes and how they manifest in plant communities, as well as experts in plant-soil feedbacks!

Enjoyable!

I'm pleased this story is part of a series, although it is a stand-alone book also, it doesn't leave you hanging. And I can I look forward to seeing where the characters go from here.

I read The Quilt by Rochelle and enjoyed that journey immensely; she has a real knack for transporting you to New Zealand.

The first in the series, Crumbs to Caviar is a suspenseful romance. I could feel and understand the characters motives, the ones that didn’t have ulterior motives that is – and they were not the ones I suspected.

Lately it’s not been often that I have looked forward to settling down in the evening with a book so much. This is an easy read and a page-turner; you are compelled to keep going and find out what will happen next, so I was engaged with the characters and where their lives were heading.

I loved the glossary, it’s wonderful to read some background on New Zealand’s culture and the language – (I’d like to add my thanks for that!) It was a treat that few authors think about providing. And it proves that this author is passionate about her home, which comes across in her beautiful prose describing the land.

If you enjoy stories about people wrestling with their hearts and heads, relationships, family matters, mystery, adventure, passion, and a good twist, this book is for you.

This is the second book I have read by this author and I was not disappointed.
Crumbs to Caviar is a romantic suspense that keeps you guessing, and keeps you turning the pages in anticipation. I particularly enjoyed the complex relationships, and it was great to read a book that was not typical or predictable.
As with the previous book, the vivid imagery really brought New Zealand to life.
There is something in this book for everyone, and people will easily be able to identify with one of the themes of love and attraction, family life and the complex relationships between parents and children, conflict brought about by divorce, friendships that are thrown on different paths and ultimately separated by their circumstances. And even better was the dangerous twist I didn’t see coming.
If you enjoy reading about complex characters, life like struggles, relationships and choices then have a look at this book. You won’t be disappointed. I hope the author doesn't take too long to get the sequel out!

A roller coaster of a romance.

I don’t normally read romance, but having read and enjoyed Carlton’s, The Quilt, I felt compelled to pick up this book. I was not disappointed. For one thing, I liked going back to her richly described New Zealand (where the first book was set), and for another, I really liked her main character, Shona McGuire. After a car accident leaves her with a jagged two inch scar on her hairline, she finds that her husband has been seeing another woman. On her own, and with a young son to support, she needs to find work. When a friend offers her a position with a news organization, Shona takes it. Soon, she meets Blake Coleman, a wealthy businessman from Los Angeles… And so sets the stage for a roller coaster of a romance, complicated enough to hold my interest until the end. I have to give this book a good grade, and look forward to the next.

A real winner on how we all learn, memorize, understand...

I've been looking for a book like this for a long time - so glad I found it. This was such a great read, for those of us who you want to understand ourselves & others and the way we learn, memorize, understand, etc. I learned a ton about myself & my husband. A little bit about the children, but that may take more time. I'm a sequential person as she categorized it, so I'll list out the features:

1. Learning Styles
a. Perception: Concrete or Abstract
b. Organize it: Sequential or Random
I finally understood how my husband thinks and organizes (or the lack thereof), because he is very random & I'm sequential - papers & books spread out haphazardly works well for him.

2. Memory Styles
a. Auditory - verbal type
b. Visual - image type
c. Kinesthetic - movement type (this one was a new concept to me, and I've actually used this style for many years, unknowingly)

3. Concentration Styles
Many styles here - this really helped me with my child and the study style that works best. You basically find your best way to be comfortable & that is the best environment you can concentrate & learn in - couch/bed/table/floor - night/day - music/silence/background noise - public/private - group/individual. The 'sit down at a desk with a lamp in total quiet' homework time is busted!

4. Understand Styles
a. Global - need the whole picture
b. Analytical - need details
I definitely have heard this before, but it was nice to read the details on it - I'm guessing I'm analytical :)

5. Intelligences
She explains how our talents can be applied for a career or hobby. Linguistic, Logical, Spatial, Musical, Kinesthetic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal. I love the categories of interpersonal & intrapersonal, because it explains the differences and talents of social vs. introverted people.

I do like that fact that the author does clarify not to categorize ourselves & others 100% in one area. We can all be a mix & match - it's not mutually exclusive.

Changed our lives for the better˜! LOVE THIS BOOK.

This is a great book. It helps understand the way we process learning. It made a huge difference to me and my daughter. She didn't want to go to college because her HS teachers didn't understand the difference in learning styles so they didn't teach the different styles to help ALL children in their classes. Once we both read this we made changes in classes and the way we studied [at the time I was an adult college student]. My daughter has a masters degree now. This book is wonderful˜!

Good resource that could be better

This book does a wonderful job of defining and describing the various learning styles, ways of understanding information, etc. It was interesting and helpful to discover that my husband and I and our oldest two children are all dominant Abstract Sequential, though a couple of us have another style that's a strong second place while the other two are only AS. However, we differ in how we understand information with one of us being kinesthetic and the others visual. It's useful information to have. However, this book is definitely not geared toward younger children. I could figure out my older 2 children's styles, but my just turned 6-year-old there isn't enough data to assess, even less so with my 4-year-old. The quiz questions are more geared toward older children and adults, both in understanding and in the ability to evaluate themselves.

Despite it's subtitle ("How to discover and teach to your child's strengths" this book is unfortunately relatively light on helping you determine how to teach to your children. What to do with my quite intelligent 9 yo that can read beautifully but is a horrible speller and is a kinesthetic learner? This book has little to help me with that question. This book is of more help in understanding the basic framework than in implementing a plan of action based on it.

Still this was very enjoyable reading. Each style and way of thinking and understanding was really brought to life for me. She looks at each of the styles from the perspective of a parent with that style, which is very helpful as well. I would recommend this book to parents and students, but in targeting any trouble areas that your child has, you may need to look elsewhere for more detailed information about how to teach to their learning styles and strengths.

Useful workbook for advanced students of calculus and linear algebra

This book is unique in its niche, as far as I know: While there are plenty of problem books for students taking first-year calculus, this book should provide a challenge to students at a graduate level. To give you a clearer idea of its contents, here is the chapter listing:

I would give this rich collection of problem 5-stars, but for my money I would have appreciated more detailed solutions. Also, the problems often use (standard) terms that the book has not defined, which can make it difficult to understand the problem being defined.
